Oh and a note about black & tans.  Reccomend you don't call it that if you're in Ireland/and Irish bar where real Irish ppl might be.  Not a good term.  We usually call it a half and half here in minnesota.

I'll make a note of that but the day I worry about offending the Irish is the day I worry about what PETA and Scientologists think...

That is my favorite beer of all time.  I first had it in Ireland, and then got really, really excited when I found out my favorite place had it here.

We have this kickass bar/restaurant near where I live that's mostly dedicated to beer.  There was a writeup in Food & Wine about the chef, who claims that he wants to show the world that beer is just as versatile as wine (I love wine).  60 different beers on tap, most of them from microbreweries, and then a bunch of imports.  I can't bring myself to even drink Miller or Bud anymore, because they're so fucking awful.

It's called a Snakebite, and they wreck you if you're not careful.

Now children, take note, he even has a proper glass.

Re: Beer Thread - exanimo - 05-29-2008

Sounds like a pretty good place.

Re: Beer Thread - Surf314 - 06-02-2008

I love the Gouden Carolus if you see it anywhere buy it immediately.  Apparently my tastes are well placed it scores a 99 at rummy's beer site.

Also tried the Three Philosophers this weekend, similar in taste but lighter and has a bit of cherry lambic mixed in.  According to Rummy's site it was brewed based on a winner of an essay contest for describing your dream beer.

You're supposed to drink beer out of a brandy snifter?  I didn't know that.  Granted I know thats not literally a snifter but it looks like it.  I'll stick with my pints or drink right out of the bottle...

Re: Beer Thread - exanimo - 06-02-2008

Brandy sniffers are more delicate and get thinner at the top. The reason for the awkward shape is so your hand rests where more beer is located so you don't warm it so quickly.  Also so you can  smell when you sip.

Re: Beer Thread - [fr31ns]Karrde - 06-02-2008

Oh, Karrde has some updates for you guys.  Notably for any lucky bastards living in Wisconsin.  New Glarus Brewing Co. has some damn good stuff.  First, they have a nice mellow brown ale called Fat Squirrel.  Has a very nutty finish and his very drinkable even for fair weathered beer drinkers.  Then there's one called Spotted Cow.  Very lager like, but sweeter with an almost fruity finish.  Two very drinkable beers that aren't over the top (though I do like beer that smacks me in the face).

That's what I'm drinking now, it's a good Belgian Blonde Beer...

Re: Beer Thread - exanimo - 06-02-2008

If I lived in Europe, I'd probably be an alcoholic.

I like a Leffe, but prefer Chimay or Delerium Tremens. I've got Leffe on tap in walking distance.

Re: Beer Thread - cannedpeahes - 06-02-2008

Beer: Stella Artois
Wine: Pinot grigio, pinot noir, white zin. Grew up around Reif Estates and the Niagara vinyards.
Liquor: Laphroaig. It's a really sharp but rich Islay.

Trying Leffe on everyone's recommendation.  Also my wife snagged a Berry Weiss cuz she likes fruity beers.  Will report back on the taste.

Well, hey, it's cheap and easy on the tongue if there's nothing else to drink. I make up for that by keeping a bottle each of Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet on hand (trust me, it's hard as hell to get good wine when you're *ahem* my age, and everybody thinks you're weird for it).

Used to be big on merlot but damn do I hate wine hangovers.  I would rather drink massive amounts of beer and shots and feel shitty the next day than to have the massive headache that comes with a wine hangover.
