The admins didn't mute the discriminator, and instead mute the guy who was insulting the discriminator.

Fail explained he didn't do the former as he thought Valentine handled it well enough herself and shut him up.

Quite frankly this is all gotten rather needlessly overwrought , if you feel that way so be it, but the servers rules still prohibit it. As for your view, with friends, you may be right, if one of you guys called me a kike, I'd get that your doing it in parody or what have you, but not everyone playing in the server during prime time (FNF is a different ballgame) is your friend. Quite a few of them are just random pubs who you have no relationship with, who very easily could get quite put off by your use of it. Whether you feel that they should or shouldn't take offense is irrelevant, as the simple fact lot of people will and thus you can't faggot on the server. And is it really such a big deal? No ones banning all swearing, it's just a couple racial slurs you can't use. Maybe your right and the world needs to get over being offended by them, but the server isn't the place for that particular crusade.

Long story short, tough shit Tongue

That's already been established.

In summary, when I, Fail Medic, hear "faggot", I'm gonna cause drama.  It's an inescapable effect.

I am also tired of being ridiculed for being batshit intolerant of it and causing backlash threads like this.  It's hardly reason for me to change my stance, though.  Nothing ever will.

So.  Yeah, I'm seeing a lot of well-spoken points up there, but I won't get in line with them.  I am an enemy of the word "faggot".  You...  none of you really understand how I feel about it, do you?  Faggot is to me as a running lawnmower is to yellow jacket nest.  Get inside my head and figure out what wire is shorting out, and you won't hear another peep out of me.  Hating the word "faggot" in any form is as natural to me as breathing.

This is a thread about respect for others.  I'll respect that there are those who don't have a problem with the word like I do.  I'll own up to making a mistake in admining.  And I apologize for being an aggrevation over this.

I value my sanity far more than the opposing beliefs of people here.  So, I'm gonna go to bed and dismiss this whole thing.  Yeah, dismiss.  I'm not going to take this to heart.  I'm just going to fuck up in the public eye again someday.  Hopefully it'll be later rather than sooner.

Re: please respect others - Luinbariel - 07-14-2009

This thread became a huge pile of crap quickly, it seems.

I've heard some nasty crap on the server before and I think it's also really hard to establish who's saying something with the intention of making someone feel bad and who's not. I generally don't like racial slurs and, despite what some people have said, they don't come up commonly among my friends or in my everyday life. But some words such as faggot, which I agree to be a pretty harsh term, unfortunately DO slip from my lips on occasion. Just the other night when some kid was harassing me once he found out I was a female I started harassing him back; he wanted my number and when he wouldn't give me his (we were gonna call display troll him as the FBI or some other appropriate thing) I dropped the f-bomb and immediately apologized.

I am kind of torn on where I stand on this issue because I know that when I say it I don't have the intent of slurring anyone and that's not how I see the word, but I am also not stupid and I realize that this does not change how OTHERS will perceive it or that it is offensive to people. I feel really bad when I say it, such as when I did the other day,  and when I make the excuse that I'm usually not thinking when this happens, but I can see how this, and other words, come to be an issue on the server and for lots of people. Though lots of us can say "well so and so knows I don't mean it that way" or "it's really common and you should just get used to it if you want to live in regular society" I don't think that takes away the complicated tangle of whom is and is not offended by it.

I don't see any quick or good solutions to this, though. I just, as usual, had to say something and I hope that this thread can maybe get on track and some more serious discussion can be had from it. It's an issue that's obviously getting to a lot of people and that I wonder about a lot too, and I don't want to verbally step on any toes.

Re: please respect others - copulatingduck - 07-14-2009

It's one of those things that's just best swept under the rug :\

Re: please respect others - Luinbariel - 07-14-2009

Because forgetting about it is going to help?

*shrug*

Deal with it now or ignore it and deal with it endlessly.

This thread has also run its course, we know, a few admins are going through trial runs so we'll see how this plays out
