Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - rumsfald - 05-22-2013

It looks like someone has taken to -1 me for the last 2 days even though I haven't posted.

It's good to have stalkers.

What are you telling me, that I shouldn't go a day without posting?

I don't. I'm on record saying that it should be reset several years ago. Admins could wipe me right now and I don't care. Or, for great lulz, they could swap my karma for yours, Karth.

I do care about confronting passive-aggressive bullshit. If someone has a beef with me, tell me. According to my tallies, all my recent hatchets have been buried. If I am missing one, I want people to give me a chance to explain myself, or let me apologize.

I speak my mind on the forums, which at times I admit is strongly opinionated. But I also have many offline PMs with people who offend me, or whom I have offended, in which we try to find common ground.

I tagged you earlier today for hoping 80s style hip hop makes a comeback (I only check the music thread sporadically)

What can I say?  I hate the 80s.

I gave you a (-) karma right now. Officially for posting in the wrong thread, but unofficially because the asshole in me sees this post as a call for actively-aggressive bullshit since being passive doesn't make the cut.

Karma doesn't matter because the reasons people give it out covers a wide range of reasons. Some people automatically dish it out based on the individual posting, while others like to give it out based on the merit of the contents of a post or for the lulz of arbitrary internet points stacking up.  I understand the desire to work out grudges and weed out passive aggressive behavior, but picking out something as arbitrary as karma points as an indicator of a personal grudge seems silly to me. It also hints to me that you might care about internet points a little more than you claim you do.

[/quote]-1s for everyone! Big Grin

Karma is beyond pointless. I mean, you guys clearly don't want me around with my karma "score", but that doesn't stop me. It's a community full of internet nerds, meaning inevitably, there's going to be socially inept rejects who think their opinion is the most important thing around.

It would be nice however if people actually dealt with issues though, and I speak as someone who's been bullied a shit ton in life. Getting -1s might not seem like it affects anyone, but we all react to it in some way. Fuck, this place was a huge contribution to my depression because I saw this place as a fun community, but no one wanted me having fun. And the worst thing, no explanation, no rational discussion, just "fuck this kid having too much fun: -1".

Honestly, you'd think I held a fucking flame war vs everyone who mattered on this forum with my karma this low.

Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - Eightball - 05-23-2013

There is the possibility that the -1 was indeed for a 2-day old post that someone just got around to reading. Maybe it was from a misclick (I've done that exactly). Maybe someone's just fucking with you.

I'd argue that karma is a useless metric for anything; it's not direct enough to be a useful source of feedback for post quality ("I got a -1? But for which of my last several posts?"), and it's hardly a measure of someone's standing in the community. I think it'd be more worthwhile if it was replaced with a system wherein you could see how many +1 or -1 a post netted (like GotFrag), but no one would aggregate a net score. Then again, this could encourage hiveminding ("wow this post got -3, must be total shit").

Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - Surf314 - 05-23-2013

I've always viewed Karma as less of a like/hate thing and more as a paradigm/renegade point system. In fact I would be in favor of labeling it as such. There isn't much point in down-voting people here but giving people renegade points is mildly amusing at times.

Re: This Made My Day/Improved My Day Thread! - Chief - 05-23-2013

wait im not getting this
do people actually care about karma or not

why is this all the sudden a big matter? its been around for how long and no one hasnt really given a damn about it, soooo

The fact that rumsfald's last joke was about getting -1s for NOT posting appears to have gone over your heads. It's posted in the "this made my day" thread because he was happy to have had stalkers, that his lack of posting had been missed.
