The U.S. is getting owned. I think Florida got more snow in December than us.

Washington is getting raped too, they should sell their snow to Vancouver.

Up here in Maine, our average temps when i'm going to work (6am) are normally -10 to 0 - This year it's been ~20

Normally by this time we have 3' to 4' of white on everything that isn't a road or somthing shoveled or plowed off. - I can count the leaves out on my yard, and there's more grass visible then snow.

You pretty much described exactly what it's like here in Hamilton, Ontario too.  It's almost Valentine's Day, and we haven't had to shovel yet...  I remember spending a recent V-day trudging through 3 feet of snow.  Big difference this year.

I made National Merit Finalist.  Hopefully that means lots of scholarships coming my way.

Have you ever had someone say how they feel about something and then you realize that you feel the exact same way, down to the exact wording?

Freaked the shit outta me and gave me sweaty palms.

Markets are closed today, so I may be able to slip out early.

There is always plenty to do. I working with High Yield debt primarily, which means really messy payment schedules, bankruptcies, and restructuring. For example, this morning I am working on a particular Airline’s bond issuance from 2005. The company deferred interest in July 2005 and has yet to actually pay a coupon since then. We are trying to determine if the pricing for the security (what it trades at) is reflecting this pending accrual for the security or not. If the price is at a significant enough premium to par (what it was issued at) then that gives us a general idea that the market believes it will make the coupon payment in this upcoming July. Even though we have access to past quarters of company financials, we can only predict the cash flows to a certain extent to determine what could be paid.

I don’t actually trade securities (I don’t have my series 7) so the market being open only impacts the amount of data we need to process intra-day, as opposed to just catching up on general issues. I wouldn’t mind getting there someday, but it’s mostly an Ivy-League kid game, even at a smaller Midwest firm like I work for. Regardless of ability, it is a much better sell to a client for them to know that their lead investment team comes from our country’s best institutions.

I’m not complaining though. I am so thankful to have any job at all right now.

Wouldn't that be pretty easy to just run through some excel macros?

Market Price (>/=/<) PV (Face Value, Deferred Interest, Future Interest)

You just compare the par value to what its traded at, then look at Quarterly profit or loss to see if they have the ability to pay, as well as the debt's seniority. Run out the previous performance in a forecasting model and see what happens Smile

Personally I <3 Crystal Ball, why yes I'd like to plug in 10 variables with a standard distribution, please run 1,000,000 possible scenarios and tell me what the probability of them coughing up the dough is.

I feel woefully under prepared to manage my money after completely WTFing over the above.

That’s the general idea =D

I haven’t really used a program like Crystal Ball or Monte Carlo sims since college really. A lot of the work you do with textbooks has little to do with what we actually do.

We have an Investment Management system that once the asset type, class, and CUSIP is built into the system a lot of the pricing and accruals are automated. A lot of my job is ensuring that the security value, holdings levels, and accruals are consistent with a third-party vendor (in our case, Bloomberg).

We would only use a spreadsheet as a last resort; as using a Spreadsheet for backup when audited is an awful idea. I do work with excel, but not half as much as I do with specific investment platforms and applications.
