Re: The "Fuck my life" thread - MissBiz - 07-29-2014

I work for a software company as what essentially is a System Analyst or Tier 3 Support (but they give it a weird name, whole other story).

After 5 years of dealing with jerk-bag clients, I am burnt out.  I have simply run out of patience to deal with improperly setup systems and improperly trained "system administrators" that ask me the same question a million times and don't read what I write in my emails.

In my previous job, I worked at a small web development start up as a Junior Developer (started as an intern).  Unfortunately, like most start ups, it didn't last.  That is how I ended up in my current job.  But that first job taught me how to look at code (Ruby on Rails) and meet and control client expectations.  I have been missing the coding part of that job, my current job doesn't let me flex my technical muscle like it used to.

So, my company posted a job opening for our internal Q&A Team which acts as a buffer between the Support department and the Development department, making sure that what the Support people say is a programming issue is actually a programming issue so that developers don't have to deal with stupid shit.  I applied for the position because it would allow me to access the code base for our products and tackle challenging problems coming from the entire company, and most importantly, I wouldn't have to deal with dick-bag clients.

However, it soon became crystal clear that I was not going to be chosen for the position.  I am either too expensive to move to the Q&A budget, too good at handling ass-bag clients and therefore indispensable in my current position, or inter-departmental politics were too strong, so I didn't get the job.  I was quite upset, as I was really hoping to escape direct client service.  However what truly enraged me is the person who got the job over me (I was told, to my face, that I was the "second choice" by the manager of the team).  Someone who has been with the company only 2 years and has NO expertise in the software modules that they SPECIFICALLY told me in the interview they were looking for.  On top of that, she is a real douche, her social skills are horrible.  She had a kid an made sure everyone in the office, including the Director of Internal Operations, knew that her vagina was so wrecked they had to give her 12 stitches. What. The. Actual. Fuck.  I worked with the Q&A team manager in the past and I know he doesn't like this chick.

So, my conclusions as to why I didn't get picked are based on the following: two other guys on my team applied for the same job.  One is not a specialist in the module I mentioned, but he has been here 6 years, he was likely too expensive to move, like me.  The other has been with the company only 3 years, but he is a specialist in the module I mentioned before and really he and I are the only two specialists for that module in our main office, so we are likely too valuable in our current positions.

So why aren't other people specializing in this module? (And therefore allowing my coworker and I to MOVE THE FUCK ON FROM DEALING WITH CUNT-BAG CLIENTS!!!!)  Because he and I fix most of the problems before they get to general support where people would be able to use those calls as a learning experience.  I run training classes to teach people about the module and how clients use it and how it commonly breaks or is configured incorrectly, but it hasn't done much good so far.

I'm just at the end of my tolerance for this whole situation.  I know that I could look at it from a stand point of "Oh wow, I'm so valuable that they had to shuffle around floppy-vagina-douche-chick because the work I'm doing is too important!" but fuck that.  I want to be doing a job that doesn't make me want to go home and scream and pull out my hair.  I want to USE my technical talents to the fullest and not feel limited when I have to go explain to floppy-vagina-douche-chick where to look in the fucking code because I know the module so well, that I have been able to pretty much build a mental picture of how the fucking programming is written!  WHAT THE FUCK!!!!!!!!!!!

Or you could join StolenToast and I in one of our projects, I've been a bit busy to work on it lately, but could always use the help (granted I can't pay anyone... yet).

Yeah don't ever trust anybody in business who tells you you're "too important". They're most definitely not looking out for your best interests. Sounds to me like it's time to move on and find a new company if they're unwilling to work with you. At least see what your options look like. I'm getting really fucking tired tier 3 IT work as well.

Re: - at0m - 07-29-2014

Being 'too valuable' to promote is a fast way for your boss to lose his 'valuable' employees to outside companies if he won't ease up and allow internal transfers. My current boss is fixing to learn that lesson.

corporations need to be burnt to the ground anyway, they're the end of humanity.

some people will still enjoy being slaves though

Re: The "Fuck my life" thread - rumbot - 07-29-2014

biz, at0m, sounds like you both have terribly shitty employers. Doesn't sound like much worth staying for.

but, I still like some early advice I was given, "if I can't replace you, why would I put myself in the position of having to replace you?"

Sounds like it's time to job search.

Re: The "Fuck my life" thread - KarthXLR - 07-31-2014

The let's plays I've been recording have been going perfect until I discovered that our most recent session has an unfixable A/V sync issue. The audio progressively gets out of sync through the whole episode so there's no way to completely fix it without painstakingly cutting and splicing every couple seconds of sound. I'm probably going to just do a montage because as of now the quality of the episodes will suffer immensly. Not only that, but one whole episode didn't even record. I gotta figure out what went wrong...

It seems big brother is gonna fuck me over on my pell grant this year and not give me enough to cover tuition without going further into debt.

Taking another year off of school? probably

It finally happened. 28 years of cycling, and I finally got hit by a car. Nothing super cereal, minor bruising n' a roughed up foot, but the lack of justice in these scenarios is infuriating. Side street(no lights, just a sign for her) going onto the largest(5 lanes), longest(15kms), and one way street in the city, and she doesn't make sure the intersection is clear before revving through. She fails to remain at the scene, has to be chased down by another decent human being, and then has the audacity to claim she saw/heard nothing. Plausible deniability despite witnesses has ruined modern justice. What a cunt.
