Haibane Renmei - Washi - At some point - [fr31ns]Karrde - 01-28-2013

So several of you have probably heard me trumpeting the fact that Haibane Renmei is one of the best shows I've ever seen.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haibane_Renmei Try to avoid spoilers if you intend to watch it.  It's excellent.  Anyway, I have a tendency to cosplay as lesser done characters.  This show has fallen out of the common vernacular and rewatching it has made me remember that I really meant to do this costume years ago.  Washi is the communicator for the Haibane Renmei.  He's kind of an interesting yet mysterious and reclusive character.  Knowledgeable, yet he holds back (for a reason).  Anyway I've always liked the look of the outfit and it gives me some interesting challenges to overcome.  Notably creating an under harness to support the wings in addition to a few large scale pieces and an excuse to work with wool.  No idea if I'm going to finish this for Acen in time.  But I'm going to try.

Also another thing is gives me a chance to build some more delicate props as opposed to the macro work I normally do.

His staff is adorable lol.
no, get your mind out of the gutter to all those who had a dirty thought

It's certainly an eye-catching cosplay; I'm more intrigued by how you are going to make the mask (and see out of it).

Very true.  Also, cannot possibly be worse than the gold mask I did for the steam punk doctor cosplay I did.  That thing was a flipping sauna.  I'm thinking I can actually do the mask out of shaped craft foam.

Any way to incorporate a cotton lining on the inside maybe to soak some of that up...?

I can envision creating the mask with an undulating inner ridge, rather one that sits relatively flush with the face.

You'd have to wash that lining though, or else it will get pretty nasty in there very quickly from moisture and bacteria and whatnot.
I suggest having it mold around your nose on the inside (with an air gap between your mouth and the mask) so that you can breathe without fogging up the mask. This is what I kind of did with the Blighted Beak and it really alleviated the fogging issue I had.
You could also look for innovative ways to ventilate the mask.
