Just came into possession of an old laptop - Chief - 08-22-2013

So I just got a pretty old laptop (2007) and I've always kinda wanted one just so i could get files on the go and use it with dropbox so i can have files synced everywhere and just do things with it. i know i'll for sure need to get a new battery for it, but it runs pretty god damn slow and i want to know if there's anything i can do to at least get it to run things better than it previously does. any good guides out there that people have previously used? should i consider using a different OS? etc. etc.

I tend to install some flavor of Linux (usually Ubuntu) on old laptops for my parents every few years. They run well enough for web browsing.

if it helps, here's the laptop and CPU-Z report http://pastebin.com/FBvXpns6 (tl;dr: its a presario v6000)

some linux os's i've looked at are debian, LXLE, and ElementaryOS. slightly leaning towards debian. any opinions?

Ubuntu has very good community support. It's easy to learn and tons of projects are now built with it in mind.

I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop that was to be given away. It makes old hardware feel snappier and is intuitive and simple to use.
