Biking for charity - Luinbariel - 04-03-2014
Heyo folks!
This year, HeK and I are participating in an event to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis. We'll join the team Faster than Ham and look forward to trouncing the competition.
The event is called "Biking to the Viking". Participants will bike from our city (Winnipeg) to Gimli (a town known for it's Viking connections) and back. All told, the trip is about 160KM (that's just under 100 miles). We've never done anything quite this big before but we're looking forward to seeing if we can get it done.
We're both taking donations and hope to each raise at least $300 before the event begins, and would appreciate anything you want to throw in!

I did 50 miles last summer. Took about 2 months of biking 1-2x a week to build up to that.
Scaling was pretty much doubling - first week I could do 6 miles, then 15, then 25, etc...
Be very open to hacking your bikes. Once I started spending 4+ hours on it at a time, I became very attuned to what parts were a torture device and needed changing. Handles, handlebars, seat, pedals, shoes, etc.

We did a lot of biking last year, and noticed the same thing; every time we went out, we could go a little longer, and a little longer, etc. I think the longest ride we've had last year was also somewhere around 40 or 50 miles. I'm pretty confident we can do this, especially since the event will be at the end of our biking season, rather than the beginning. And the trip is over two days, so it's half and half with a bunch of water stops. I think we'll be good.
As for bikes, we made a lot of changes last year. I noticed that my Canadian Tire bike wasn't really cutting it and the frame isn't right for my height, so... gonna buy a new one as soon as the weather is good. I'm excited for a bike that'll be more comfortable, and might try a new seat... I switched out my seat last year as well and it's okay.

She's lost a number of friends to Cancer and runs a non-profit for her area... according to her the most difficult part of it has little to do with terrain, but weather. Apparently rain sucks when you're trying to bike 1,005 miles...

Alternately you could just contact the airline and ask how they would recommend transporting a bicycle.

I only travel places because I do it for free. Kills the point for me if I'm paying exorbitant baggage fees.

[/quote]Hence contacting them. They generally don't charge extra for certain types of common large luggage like rifle cases, fishing pole cases, and skis. They may be willing to waive charges for a bicycle, depending on how much you can compact it.
