Horrific performance in GTAV (FIXED, CPU PROBLEM) - KarthXLR - 10-31-2015

Normally I'd put this in the GTA V thread, but this is a PC-specific issue.

I just bought GTA V on the sale and have been pretty excited to try it out. First thing I notice? 100% CPU usage in the menu.

My Processor is an i5-750 clocked at 2.66ghz over 4 cores. It's not the strongest CPU so I expect some challenges in GTA V, but I'm struggling to keep it at 60fps on the lowest settings. Hell, it gets even worse when I start driving. Usually sub-20, again on the lowest settings.

I know my computer isn't the highest of high ends, but it can almost max Crysis, so what's going on here? Everyone raves about how great the performance in GTA V's port is, but I am struggling to even get it to a stable 30fps.

Buying a new CPU or any new parts is out of the question right now.

System:
Win 7 64-bit
8 gigs DDR3
GTX 770 2GB
i5-750 2.66ghz
2 TB drive

GTA relies heavily on graphics memory it seems more than anything.

I struggle at a 3GB card sometimes.

So, what, am I just fucked until my next system overhaul?

Not necessarily. There's some honestly stupid graphics situations where higher settings perform better. Also make certain you are using the absolute latest drivers for your GPU (there was a lot of early driver issues).

I am, but there's no doubt about it: My CPU is the bottleneck here. It's getting absolutely destroyed.

Looking at my options, it seems like it's really feasible to get my CPU OC'd to 4GHz (at least close to it) with a proper heatsink, and buying one of those seems a hell of a lot cheaper than buying a new CPU.

I'm on an i7 3770 which I think is a 3 ghz. Start there then move up.

Actually just checked my CPU temps for the first time in forever. Idling at 95C! Christ, I should've done this sooner! Already ordered a new Heatsink and will install it the minute it gets here.

It's very likely that your CPU is downclocking to save itself.

Which cooler did you go with? Did you order a thermal paste too?

Ordered a Cryorig H7 (mainly because it's one of the few fans that will fit in my case). Anything taller than 6 inches won't let my case close. Roommate just built a PC so he has some spare Artic Silver.

Edit: checking further, seems my CPU is downclocking itself to about 2.4 GHz. Yeesh.

Yeah this should resolve not only your GTA issues it may resolve some other performance hungry issues too

Got the heatsink today. Idling at a cool 34C.  Now...for overclocking!

RE: Horrific performance in GTAV - FlyingMongoose - 11-05-2015

So you're not going to test GTA V performance without the OC first?

GTA already was kicking my CPU's ass just by releasing their recommended requirements. I see no reason to continue letting my processor by a bottleneck!

Currently at 4.0 ghz and running an average of 48C.

Doing some stress tests.

CPU is maxing out at about 83C. About an hour and I'll call this a success.

2 failures and a blue screen later, I have successfully managed 10 passes in Intel burn test on the very high setting. I think I got the VTT and voltage right

GTAV test: Maintaining an average of 50 fps with many super high settings! This heatsink saved my ass!
