BRB 4 Dead discussions - Vandamguy - 11-15-2008

This post is to keep track of bureaucratic needs for the BRB 4 Dead steam group.

current permissions look like this
[Image: permis.jpg]

note: I've changed this to be a private group and given invite privs to officers. Everyone that joined the group prior to this change has been made an officer and has permission to invite.

If you need an invite it would be prudent to add a post with a link to your steam ID Smile

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - fyre - 11-15-2008

Invite me please. Is there a way to search for games with people in a group, like you can with your friends?

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Wedge - 11-15-2008

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - x - 11-15-2008

Mind games. Vandam posted last week saying that the group was open temporarily before becoming private but now it's locked you all want to join? Forbidden fruit.

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Surf314 - 11-15-2008

(shrugs) It was another prompt.  While it was screwed up for me (textures), I had no reason to play multiplayer.

when someone cant have something, it makes them want it more.
this is mind games Smile

we also have an open invitation policy, which is why members have 0 permissions.

Ah, so if we tell people to make as many new threads as they want then they will use existing threads?

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Vongore - 11-15-2008

The normal brb.u group should be like this. closed, invite only and a regular Player of the Week selection :3

Nice jorb Vandamn

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - jorge - 11-16-2008

Why can't regular users invite?

Like how the Dtoid group used to be?  Tongue

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - copulatingduck - 11-16-2008

From a long lost topic, back from when there was debate about creating a brbu steam group:

Quote:
That [creating a separate brbu steam group] would be pretty cool. I couldn't join the Dtoid group because I need an invite or something like that, and that was months ago.

You are the now the poster child for why we need to be in control of the Steam group.
Should be explanation enough why closing the group is a retarded idea. And if you're still not understanding, I'll give you a hint: if it were closed, you probably wouldn't be in the steam group either.

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Vandamguy - 11-16-2008

hmm
i guess my idea needs abit of explainin ..

I've made it a private group because I intend to add everyone that's inthe BRB4D group to my friends list , in order to facilitate Friends only matches. And I encourage others to do the same.
I've recently purged my friends list and removed anyone icouldnt remember to make room Smile

I feel the need to re-iterate that everyone is capable of inviting at this point.

additional point for discussion: does anyone see the necessity of having a sign posted next to this gate that says 'you must be this smrt in order to roll with us' in a team based FF on game ?

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - rumsfald - 11-16-2008

Duck, Vandamguy, let me see if I can get you two to hug this out.

I think there is a difference between a general purpose gaming steamgroup (that is, BRBu, Destructoid, Foxtoid, etc.), and a BRBu spinoff focused on one game.

The general purpose should always be open with broad admin representation to keep it civil. This is the "main community," and should be the first point of entry for newcomers.

For a BRBu spinoff, I think it could be managed either as open or as closed with everyone having invite rights (like Vandam has set up). It also lets people who have L4D go to a short list of others within the game, rather than spamming everyone in BRBu who may or may not have L4D. Vandam's point about Friendly Fire in L4D is well taken.  Also, advertising a server is going to be less relevant in L4D, given the smaller number of players at time.

I'm surprised that we didn't have spin-offs before this for the Ship or Mod night or Planetside.

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Surf314 - 11-16-2008

I agree with Vandam and Rummy.  Most of our L4D servers are going to be closed because they will be run by people like me doing it off an old box and their cable connection and they don't want random pub scrubs in it using up their electricity/bandwidth.

Not that I want to be a closed community I've always been one for openness but this is definitely not going to be a game where people are going to say "hey I played on this really cool server and I should visit their site."  It looks like a situation where you get all the disadvantages and none of the benefits when playing with randoms which is part of why most of us seem a bit uneasy with some of valve's decisions.  Although overall the game seems like a blast and I set up a server so I could play games with people that will make the game enjoyable for me.

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - copulatingduck - 11-16-2008

I was responding to Vongore's request to close the main BRBU group. That should definitely not be a closed group.

The groups made for separate games are fine though, I have no problem with closing groups for separate games like BRB4Dead. Thought I had made that more clear. Thanks for the kind (gay?) word though Rummy. :-*

But 'Owner+Officers' is bulleted for invites rather than 'All Members'.

If you aren't an owner or officer your a non-person.

Re: BRB 4 Dead discussions - Wedge - 11-17-2008

By the ways, aren't they adding a thing that lets you play with people inside a certain Steam Group (and also lets you link the group to play on a specific server if possible)?
