Updated several models with optimizations and new LODs.
Best Update EVER!

Short answer, your game runs better.

Long answer, they included Level of Detail models which are models the weapons are swapped out for as you walk away from them. Basically, before this update, if you and a spy holding an ambassador stood on opposing balconies on 2fort, the gun he's holding would make up more than 85% of the spy's total polygons. Reason being was because you were rendering the gun at the same detail that far away than if you were to stand right next to him.

Best part is, that sort of stuff was already available in the textures. Only took them about a decade to port the idea to models too.

Pretty sure lod was available on models for a long time, I know Source had it from the getgo.

The 'original' TF2 (unreleased, circa 2000, the milsim) had model lod.

Did it? I wasn't too familiar with the original Source engine

Quote:Improved engine handling of server queries

hopefully this means there won't be any more stuttering.

Doesn't this just affect the server browser?

I'm pretty sure it is involved in any information between the game and the server, like player position and stuff. Though I'm not good with computers and could have misinterpreted this.

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - Versus - 01-28-2011

i was thinking server browser too

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - Kirby - 01-28-2011

It has to do with the fact any SourceDS server can be DoS'ed by simply spamming it with thousands of requests for the player list and rule list per second, the engine wasn't good at dealing with that and would exhibit many bad behaviors, like the recent "server randomly freezes for 30 seconds and drops every player" bug, that wasn't a bug, that was servers being DoS'ed. THe engine was so pooly coded to handle loads like that, that it was possible to crash/flood any SourceDS server with pretty much any home broadband, it didn't take much bandwidth to do it.

The update in no way has anything to do with the end user.

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - PyroZombie - 01-31-2011

This new Monday Night Combat update is absolute shit.

You couldn't pay me to buy that game again.

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - copulatingduck - 02-01-2011

didnt valve already pay you to buy it once with hats?

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - backfire - 02-03-2011

Hey, did that promotional stuff get old yet?

Cause they're doing it again.

Just don't buy it then, the most it can do is be an inconvenience where they push an update right as a match or community event is about to start  >Sad

Also sort of a game update, make sure to update your favorites lists, stats should be streaming already if i got the URL pointing correct and HeK doesn't need to do anything else. I'll post a group announcement about it tonight

Except you still have you look at all the tards with ugly unoptimized weapons that don't really fit the whole TF2 aesthetic

Re: Updates of the Week (ongoing discussion) - backfire - 02-03-2011

alright, apparently after the game comes out, you'll be able to craft these ones since they actually have different stats and not just reskins.

brb saving metal.

The pyro one seems pretty baller. Afterburn that doesn't vanish until you get healed.

JFK just stop it, please.  I think Valve's finally gone off the deep end and said "fuck balance" completely.

It's a glitch I'm sure. Death by afterburn from that has the killicon of whatever flamethrower you're carrying.
