TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Fail Medic - 06-21-2009

In before tl;dr

Every week, "BRB, Uninstalling" hosts an event called Friday Night Fights (FNF).  It coordinates a get-together of the community under the roofs of several games.

While there are other selections like Planetside and Left 4 Dead, Team Fortress 2 is chairman of the board when it comes to BRB's community games of choice.  This topic is focused on TF2 sessions during FNF.

The current TF2 FNF base formula:
  • A random admin would lock the server at 8:00 PM CDT (01:00 UTC)
  • Have a normal round
  • Have a Pickup* round
  • Have a Rock Paper Scissors** round
  • Coast for a few more rounds
  • Unlock the server in one to two hours from start

* Pickup (Fatkid): Everyone joins the Spectator team.  Two random people are asked to be Red / Blu Captains.  They then alternate in choosing members for their team.  The last person picked is encouraged to change their name to Fatkid but this is up to them.
** Rock Paper Scissors (RPS): At the start of each round, a random individual on each team is asked to pick a class before everyone leaves spawn.  The class they select is the class everyone else must then select.  The point is to have all Spies vs. all Snipers, all Scouts vs. all Heavies, etc.

Recently, FNF has tried to change things up a bit with themes / Opinion Wars (Sniper vs. Spy, New Kirk vs. Old Kirk).  We also dabbled with temporarily suspending the no-mic-spam rule.  These have yielded varying degrees of success.

SO.  I'll just leave this topic right here.

I've heard specific individuals say that FNF is boring.  "Pickups and RPSs get boring."  Also, some ideas tried recently (Transformers-themed mic spam) were met with apathy or a cold reception.  So, what else can we try or do?

If you have an idea for future TF2 FNFs, please say so here.  If you've offered one before, say it again here.  Yes, even that one.  Movie ideas, more DJ nights, what?  Ultimately, it is up to the admin running FNF that night for what to allow and what to do, but make your suggestions anyway.  You can also make a reply that says, "FNF doesn't need to be anything else than what it is."  Either way, we're fishing for feedback.

What say you?

From what I can tell, people who think RPS is boring are the type that can't have fun unless they're winning. The only way I can see it being boring is if maps with long rounds are picked, like most all regular maps. Perhaps restrict RPS to maps that tend to have short rounds (eg, Steamroll).
Also, the true meaning of RPS is all soldiers vs all soldiers.

This is a good idea, additionally, people dont like rps if they get a class that they suck with, there's no real way to fix that, except to pick easier classes (soldier, pyro, heavy, dont pick spy and demo)

also, themed micspam kinda sucks, i suggest bring the DJ idea back, that was cool.

I really do like the DJ idea.

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Badgerman of DOOM - 06-21-2009

DJing was the shit.

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Fail Medic - 06-21-2009

Thanks for the replies.  More, please!

On what's been said so far:

- Should DJ'ing be every week or kept to a once-in-a-while thing?  I'm leaning towards once-in-a-while for several reasons.  But yeah, DJ night was cool and should happen again.
- Should FNF have new maps?  The "maps du semaine" feature has been relegated to Team Fortress Tuesdays.  Should Fridays be limited to #1's map pack or should we try new maps, especially ones that lend themselves to short rounds?

Could we try "fun" maps on fridays?

There are plenty gametypes we haven't tried on FNF that are on  #2, such as billiards. There are also some other game types, like the soccer one

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Scary Womanizing Pig Mask - 06-21-2009

What Ghoff said. I think the burden falls on the community though, we need to actively go out and find more fun unique maps to try, not just expect Fail and Caff to do it for us. Also bring back Busytown! It was pretty Tongue for regular play but perfect for RPS. Also more opinion wars. I rather enjoyed that. And Bessjump. Maybe not for regular server time, but it was always a fun map to dick around on during FNF shenanigans. On the whole though, I think silly stuff shouldn't be planned, (no, ok now we do RPS, now it's the designated time for tomfoolery) but just played by ear. My fondest FNF memories are of impromptu stuff we came up with then and there. People just need to be creative and willing to try and come up with fun stuff.

Or just more Wackyraces.

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - KarthXLR - 06-21-2009

I saw busytown and I remembered. I remembered the perfect map.

Also pacman.

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Radio Raheem - 06-21-2009

the main issue i see is everyone in fnf has a mic and loves to talk. 20ish people all yelling over eachother gets old really quick

Not when admins are actually getting louder trying to get people to stop talking all at the same time!

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - cbre88x - 06-23-2009

havent been to an FNF in awhile because these problems.

-During FNF (or at least parts of it) should be alltalk off.
-Do the usual RPS, Pickups, fun maps for lulz. One of each so it's all fresh.
-Stop playing the same damn maps over and over (Junction,Goldrush,Badwater,Granary). It gets OOOOLLLD. Play some Aqua, Pipeline, Warpath, Castle, 2Fort...something else other than the same 4 damn maps.
-Keep doing themed nights.

That's all I can think of right now.

I agree whole-heartedly with the above. I still remember some of the crazy maps we would go on. We need more of those, even if they do suck.

Re: TF2 Friday Night Fights Discussion Thread - Wedge - 06-23-2009

Is the server going into FNF mode when it crashes something because of recent updates, or because it's not being turned off properly or both?
