BRBu Imposter Servers! - Eightball - 12-30-2012

Gee, aren't we popular?

This morning I got a friend invite from a UGC contact. He added me to inform me of a hacker on our server, and linked me a stream VOD (skip to 30:50). One thing you'll notice is when he pulls up the scoreboard, is that the server name is "BRB, Uninstalling <<Attack/Defend #2>>". We sure as hell don't operate any servers by this name. He gave me some IP addresses, and I checked them out. There are two pub servers whose names bear BRB, Uninstalling. The MOTD is a video ad, and doesn't reveal a whole lot about who owns or operates the server. HeK reported that they are hosted by HFB servers.

Here are the IP addresses:
199.229.249.120:2008
199.229.249.119:2009

And here is our chatlog.

What do?

EDIT: MOTD contains links to http://www.pinion.gg/, but this may just be ad sourcing.

Interesting, it might be worth checking with valve to see if such shenanigans are de-listable offenses

If only other people on brbu still played tf2 outside tft and fnf... i'll hit up the servers next time i'm on and inbreastigate.

Re: BRBu Imposter Servers! - HeK - 12-30-2012

I cannot find these servers on the Steam server browser or Gametracker. I wonder if they are targets of a redirect server...

Re: BRBu Imposter Servers! - Eightball - 12-30-2012

I got the same ad-sourced MOTD on a completely different server just now, and joining off of steam friends is on the fritz. It's possible we're seeing some weird effects of a problem on steam/valve's end. It's just really fucking weird that the server names use BRB uninstalling, but aren't precisely the same as any server we've ever run.

Re: BRBu Imposter Servers! - HeK - 12-30-2012

On closer inspection, the 2008 server is loaded with bots.

Re: BRBu Imposter Servers! - k0ala - 12-30-2012

What if someone's out there thinking "Fuck those BRB Uninstalling servers, they're just full of bots and spam"?

This will not stand.

but...why?

Re: BRBu Imposter Servers! - Eightball - 01-02-2013

No idea. While it appears that 199.229.249.119 has changed names, 199.229.249.120 still bears the BRB Uninstalling name. What do?

Here's what I think they are - they name mirror popular servers, and cycle their name frequently, people mistakenly join them and are forced to sit through an MOTD ad.

The servers ops hope to make up hosting costs through the ad revenue, seems like a terrible plan...

Just report them to valve and see if we can get something done.
