A quick word about the Dtoid melodrama, please read - Surf314 - 06-28-2008

As many of you know the melodrama has restarted with some members of the Dtoid community and I think it's important we take the time to really think about this so that we don't make mistakes we will regret later.

The people that are causing the problems are those that tend to like to create conflicts, it's entertaining to them.  That's part of the enjoyment of the internet for them and you need to realize that.  The key here is to not add fuel to the fire.  Remember any comments made will be taken out of context, they will be used to continue the flame war, and you better believe they will be saved up and presented to whoever matters as a case for us being the bad guys.

Now a lot of people are angry, and most of you have a right to be.  Hell I get angry too.  The important thing though is to keep this flame war one sided.  We need to just let them make asses of themselves.  Feel free to make comments, blogs, whatever.  I'm not telling you what you can and can't do.  What I'm asking you is to really think before clicking the post button on anything.  You need to be aware of how it can be used against you and us.  What we really want is for this to go away.  That's why this community was started, to have fun and play games beyond this crap that goes on online.  And we need to be able to go back to having fun in peace.  Their server is already doing badly, and we all know it.  We don't need to make fun of them about it or attack them.  Part of the reason they are starting this crap up again could be to poach people for their server.

So let them do what they want, let them make fools of themselves.  We know it won't make their server population grow.  We know it won't hurt us.  Just please don't let them make you make fools of yourselves.

Also remember that they are snooping these forums for ammunition, which is pretty lame but whatever I guess they've got time on their hands.  So don't vent in this thread, or I'll lock it.

Gah I'm trying to spell and grammar check it before duck does.  Found another error. Tongue

If someone gets under your skin, and you want to reply when you are angry a good rule of thumb is to ask a member of the community for their opinion about what you want to say, whether you should say it, and how you should say it.

Nearly every time I participated in the e-drama last week (and prior go-rounds), I talked it over with other community members beforehand, and I received very helpful feedback in allowing me to see the bigger picture.  In some cases I wound up not posting, in some cases I held back posting things on Saturday that wound up being appropriate to say on Wednesday.

If I'm around, I'm happy to chat over steamchat.  If you send me a PM I can usually get back to you within a day.  I can't speak for whether other people would also be willing to help you, but these people that I look to for advice to keep me from looking stupid: Surf, ScottyG, Senior Tacos, Caffeine, Kor, Insomnia, Fail.

If you want to make comments make them like rummy does, I was a bit disappointed at Pawkit's comment on Grim's post, as for snooping, let them. Truth be told, despite stating that I disagree with Niero's policies in regards to administration, he was the one who gave the final word on including both servers or neither. He sticks to his guns, gotta give him at least that.

That's a good way to handle it too, but for the people that can't help but to get involved it's something they need to think about.

Re: A quick word about the Dtoid melodrama, please read - cannedpeahes - 06-28-2008

Well, no, that's not a fair tack. Everybody is able not to be involved, and some people don't. Not that I or anybody else minds that, but if you're reacting then you're disappointing us and fulfilling them. So don't react; just talk.

Whatever, the Dtoid drama continues whatever the case. I say, we're only Dtoid come Fridays.

+1 nonetheless

why don't we just cease any affiliation with dtoid, the server gets full, FNF or not. It does more bad than good sure pretty much all our base comes from there, but I think we can fly from our own wings.
dtoid is at a point of no return, a helpless cause.

Dtoid is where we came from, we can't really ignore that. And cutting FNF just isn't a proportionate reaction to this; it would send shockwaves through our community, and it wouldn't really help at all. The same assrats would keep harassing us, whatever happens. All we can do is admin like crazy, keep our noses clean, and wait it out.

It's your own personal decision to decide whatever websites or groups you do and do not want to affiliate with.  For those awesome folks that spend their money and time to maintain the servers, it is their decision to affiliate their servers wherever they like.  The can advertise in a cblog, or not, it's an individual decision.

That said, many of us started on dtoid and have been reading/lurking/posting before TF2 came out, and I am sure some will continue to read/post/lurk on dtoid after TF3 comes out.  I personally am not going to stop reading dtoid regardless of what others in BRBu decide. What I like about dtoid, and what I like about BRBu, is that both aspire to be inclusive communities of witty, intelligent, and foul-mouthed nerds.  Asshats will always be asshats, but don't let them make you forget what you care about.

sorry eschatos, I accidently hit post before I typed anything in, I didn't intend to "me too"

Don't give up on Destructoid because of a few assholes.  It's still a great site.

I don't frequent dtoid (though it is how I found the server back in the day), can I get a TLDR version somehow?

Don't bother yourself with it, the sheer idiocy of it all would make your head spin

Exactly. Every community has it's resident dicks. There are still plenty of great people on Destructoid. Enough to keep me going at least.

Yeah, all I can really say is chill out.  The worst you can do is fuel the fire.  If they want to be jerks like that, let them.  THAT MEANS YOU SEABREEZE, YOU HOGMOUTHED APPLEJOHN.

I agree and disagree here, the problem with dtoid is that the assholes get too much freedom while a good banhammer session would fix the site post haste...
