Natural Disasters - Ianki - 06-14-2008

The city i live in in Iowa is being flooded.  Right now, everything is closed and by the end of the tomorrow, every bridge will be closed, the water treatment plant will close down, rolling blackouts will ensue, and animals will roam the streets ala 12 monkeys.

Share your nature vs man stories here.

Re: Natural Disasters - A. Crow - 06-14-2008

I lived outside Beaumont TX for 14 years.

You may know this as the place that got raped by hurricane Rita weeks after Katrina.  Rita was the worst it had been hit, but not by much.  I believe it was '94 when the worst flooding I've seen happened, we were getting 4" of rain an hour for a couple hours during the initial storm.  I got to ride jet ski's through the neighboring sub-division where the 2nd story of houses were flooded.  It's funny how they were always snooty because of the country club, yet it did little compared to the 36" elevation difference between sub-divisions to guard against water.  WHERE IS YOUR GOLF COURSE NOW?!???

Re: Natural Disasters - copulatingduck - 06-14-2008

After Katrina hit, the area I'm from (East Texas) was flooded by thousands and thousands of homeless bl... Wait....

North Georgia/Tennessee is great. We're protected by a chain of mountains that disrupt most bad weather cycles. We still get all the bad storms, but I've rarely seen a flood, tornado, or anything else up here. Probably the worst weather I've seen was the blizzard of '93.

Re: Natural Disasters - ainmosni - 06-14-2008

Seeing as my country used to be underwater until the dutch used their elite skill to reclaim it, we laugh in the face of danger and build epic water conrol methods.

For instance: The Delta Works

Re: Natural Disasters - Budr - 06-14-2008

That's nothing, Ain. The British routinely have horrendous problems with flooding as soon as we get more than an inch of rain and yet continue to build cheap housing on flood plains.

Well, this country used to litterally be underwater, I'm sitting 6 meters below sea level as we speak... but because we have wicked skills with water, floods haven't been around half as badly since we put up the Delta Works... The only thing that gets flooded now are fields that are designated to be flooded during heavy rain etc. So we don't get too much natural disasters here... Wink

Re: Natural Disasters - CaffeinePowered - 06-14-2008

I live in tornado alley, Ive seen 3 feet of water in my basement, thankfully it was way before we decided to finish it, that was back in 1993. I also drove through the aftermath of this tornado. Ive also seen several funnel clouds and had one literally pass nearly directly overhead.

Living in the midwest is great isnt it?

All of you are lucky.  I remember getting hit by three hurricanes in a row, here in Florida.  Going without power for weeks is not fun.

Re: Natural Disasters - Fail Medic - 06-14-2008

I'm living on borrowed time.  I'm in south central Louisiana and was spared by Katrina, Rita, and several predecessors in my 30 years here.  The worst experiences I've had with a hurricane is getting stung by yellow jackets while boarding up a window and cleaning up one-and-a-half golf courses of debris; I gladly count my blessings.

Do you know that the ground after a hurricane is no longer composed of topsoil but a solid mass of red ants?  It's true.
