Re: 2012 - Luinbariel - 08-04-2008

Good lord, don't get me started on this.

I was administrating until recently (I retired) on a forum for stuff like this, among other things, and this topic has come up approximately one quadrillion times.

There are a huge number of theories as to what will happen, ranging from "The veil will fall!", to (for those who considered themselves otherkin) "we'll get our true forms back!" to "absolutely nothing at all will happen!" (which I personally believe).

Many of these theories have nothing really to them and are just being passed around various internet communities, and some border on conspiracy theorist styles worthy of the Lone Gunmen, and yet others have pushed out some "evidence" or at least something to back themselves up on. For instance, there are some who are saying a super volcano will form beneath Yellowstone National Park, based upon some actual data that the entire crust of that area is actually rising, most likely due to some sort of pressure build up beneath the surface (not entirely uncommon, though the amount of rise has been). Most of that information was pulled from here or here.

Some people argue over whether the important year will be 2012 or 2010, not sure where the difference comes from, either. Mostly threads on this topic I've seen in other places simply degenerate into arguments and the like, which is a bit sad because I like to discuss some of the more out there theories with intelligent folks, whether I believe it or not. Some neat ideas often come up. I'm curious to see where this thread goes.

Re: 2012 - A. Crow - 08-04-2008

yeah, there's some such shit about the long count running out of space on the Mayan calendar on 21DEC2012.  I guess we should all blame the Mayans for not creating another calender round to contain the long count when they came up with the idea some 3 thousand years ago.

Re: 2012 - KarthXLR - 08-04-2008

The mayans believed this. Then again, the mayans were dumb enough to all be killed within 10 years.

Which orifice did you pull 10 years from?  No one knows exactly why classical Mayan culture disappeared.  And their remain descendants gave the Spanish one helluva fight compared to the paltry 3 years it took Cortes smash the Aztecs.  Fun Fact: my Portuguese professor would regularly refer to me as Cortes due to my policy on attendance policies.

Re: 2012 - Surf314 - 08-04-2008

I'd trust the sumerians more when it comes to my apocolypse, after all they did know about the 10th planet way before we did.

Re: 2012 - Neonie - 08-04-2008

LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL IN THE YEAR 2000 ALL OF ALL COMPUTERS ARE GONNA SHOWN DOWN ON NOES Y2K IT R TEH APOCALYPSE GET IN THE SPACE SHIP GO GO GO.

Don't give me some bull shit like this. The world is going to end just like it should, nice and fucking slow as we run out of gas, go into chaos, become citizens of the country wal-mart and have debit cards implanted into our fucking hands and the internet implanted into our brains.

Re: 2012 - Eschatos - 08-04-2008

They probably just hadn't gotten around to updating their calenders any further when they got wiped out by whatever.  The world is not going to end because of a few lazy priests.

Re: 2012 - Dave - 08-04-2008

hmm i kinda want an apocolypse, i want to be the first guy to punch aliens/menonahorse/god in the face

also zombies would be cool.

Re: 2012 - HeK - 08-04-2008

I'm personally more worried about the Epoch overflow in 2038. Aka, the Y2K38 bug: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_2038_problem
Unlike the Y2K bug, this one actually shows some promise to cause annoyances.

Will we even still have computers by 2038?  I'd assume the nano-tech revolution will happen by then.

It doesn't have the same ring as the year 2000 bug though...
