Blackbox is pretty awesome. I used it for a looong time, until I became too lazy to put it on my current XP install.

You can run it like a normal program while explorer.exe is running.

However, if you click "install" in the blackbox options while you run it, it will replace Explorer.exe and instead just run Blackbox.

You can set it to affect only the current user or all users as well.

If you no longer want to use it just hit uninstall and don't run Blackbox... your desktop+windows shell will go back to being the same.

OMG, one of the few pieces of software I've ever paid for in my life. Twice even, once for regular license, and then again when they upgraded to 3 so I could get the lifetime one. Smile

Welcome to the UNIX desktop circa 10 years ago... Wink

Re: Cool Software - KorJax - 09-01-2008

The different types of blackbox are all just different versions made by different people.  The most "current" features wise is in BBlean and BBclean, so get those over the other ones (which lack alot of features).  I think BBclean allows you to have icons in the right click menu (which is why you don't see them in that screenshot as I used BBlean, and never bothered to switch over).

Plug-ins you can download, google them Wink

I think the clock is called DigitalEx (there are many different types of clocks), and the dock-esque thing is actually two plugins working together that came with the shell:  called BBicon (for the icons), and BBsilt (for the dock).

The one thing that sucks about the icons though is I can't figure out how to add command lines to them... which sucks when you work on a mod and need to have the icon shortcuts point to a mod command.

Blackbox takes a night or so to really understand how it works to where you can do what you want with it but once you learn it, it's great.

Re: Cool Software - Versus - 09-01-2008

I remember having at least 50 quicklink icons :-X

Re: Cool Software - 1Trace1 - 09-01-2008

For the life of me I can't figure out how to use my own images as wallpapers(without having them reset after reboot). Other than that BB is tops.

Re: Cool Software - Negate - 09-01-2008

so how do you configure bbIcon?

Wow, haven't looked at that one since they went 3.0... now it's functional AND pretty!  Thanks for the tip.

There should be an icon on your desktop already (unless you removed it) linking to something like notepad, or it might just be a box (which means nothing is set to it).

Right click the icon -> Set Icon set's the icon.  You can click any shortcut/exe file and it will automatically use/find the icon for that.

Then right click the icon -> Set Command set's what program it runs.  If you picked the icon for the program (i.e. from a firefox shortcut) the program will auto-locate the location of the .exe file, so you usually just have to click the .exe file to run the program.

Right click an icon -> Global Settings -> New Icon to add another icon (you can also delete icons from this menu).

To get it to appear in the dock, just check the "In Slit" to move the icons over to the BBslit (which is like a universal dock).  Right clicking the slit itself allows you to adjust it's orientation/location.

Only problem with the icon's is that with BBlean (what I use) I can't figure out a way to exicute command lines on them (i.e. "-devmode" shortcut command for crysis).

To use images as wallpapers, it works just like windows... go to Display to set the picture and/or just right click the image you want in Firefox/Image Viewer and click "Set as Desktop Background"

Re: Cool Software - hawtpawkithero - 09-06-2008

don't bother with BB4win if you're on vista, it was never programmed for it and is very shaky.

Re: Cool Software - copulatingduck - 12-27-2008

Bump because it was a pain for me to rediscover blackbox. Anyone got any other cool software to share? :-*

Unetbootin is a cool utility (that I don't think has been mentioned yet) that lets windows users create bootable flash drives. ;-)
