you go Senators. Damn the government for interfering in the free market.

(description of the bill in question - "an amendment to a Defense Appropriations bill that would prevent the Pentagon from doing business with contractors who force employees into binding arbitration over rape and sexual assault charges.")

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diamagnetism#Diamagnetic_levitation

Many materials exhibit a diamagnetic effect when supercooled (a la liquid nitrogen like he's using). It looks like he's got a track made out of nickel rare earth magnets in some sort of alternating pole configuration, then a cup with what looks like a pyrolitic carbon baseplate. The carbon, when cooled, generates a repelling magnetic field in the presence of an external field, causing the thing to float.

I seriously hope you're not serious. There shouldn't be any way for a company - through any sort of contract with an employee - to prevent something as heinously criminal as rape to go completely unpunished. It's a crime, as in police should be involved. Did you even read what was done to the woman whose particular story caused this legistation to go forward?

holy jesus wtf... i really hope there was more to the bill ... 30 votes?  proves they just vote on principle not on the actual bill...

i love all the arguments they use, like that the government shouldn't interfere

except that the bill is just saying they wont do business with them, not that they'll shut them down.

or are these 30 senators against consumer's choice...?

"It's turning
-Get closer
-Yes

The Supraconductive Train

So here, we see the whole track. I'm getting closer, from the top.
We can explain the different rails, the different track. I lean like this. We see you put the spacer (stupid French can't use French words, wtf, I hate France).
-You good?
-Wait. Before I do... here.
-It's a thing we have seen a hundred times

Now you stop"

...

"Record

You see it levitate?
Wait, we need a piece of paper.
-Oui. we can (I seriously hate those Euros). No problem.
-We can?
And now, it moves like this. Now you move back?
Can I turn it around?
-Yup."

...

"I got a problem.
-You got it?
-Yes.
-I turn it around?
-Ready
Nickel
(Not sure if it's used in english too. Means perfect)
Put it back. And now I've zoomed on the landing."

Not much about how it works. Sorry =(.

Re: Neat stuff (non-lulz but interesting things) - Surf314 - 10-20-2009

Thanks Benito, I read a bit about it in the reddit comments. From what I understand the setup of the magnetic field is such that it only allows the thingee (technical term?) to move side to side, any forward and back motions are pushed back to the center. I'm not exactly sure how that same field traps it from going up or down as well but it's probably a similar effect.

Bouyant magnetic force that decreases proportional to the cube of distance from the magnets + gravity = static position above the magnets

And when it was upside down? Is there an equilibrium location that it is at where the pushing and pulling forces equal each other?

[/quote]see now that one's tougher, and i'm not sure what was causing it. If I had to hazard a guess I'd say there was also a magnet in the shuttle, in addition to the diamagnetic material, but I'm not sure.

May have already posted this: http://www.twocansandstring.com/

Really fun website. Just an ask and tell website. Even keeps track of your own questions and 3 answers to them. Heck, it doesn't even have to BE a question!

Some examples on mine:

Quote:Question: Hello?

Response: Hi there! e-mail me!

(removed email for obvious reasons)

I love talking to people ^^

Response: hello?

Response: ello love

Quote:Question: I'm bobbin, are you my mother?

Response: I AM HAL9000

Response: no i'm your daddy Wink

Response: I don't even know what to say to that

Quote:Question: The Captain would like to thank everyone for keeping the plane snake-free.

Response: Enough is enough! I have had it with these motherfucking snakes on this motherfucking plane!

Response: Ugh my moms weird bf likes to cook and Im pretty sure hes trying very hard to hide the fact that hes gay. He got excited over a brownie pan what a freak!

Response: im tired of these monkey fighting snakes on this monday thru friday plane. TV version which makes the quote much funnier
