Mounting Tv on the wall - IdiotWithGuns - 01-06-2009

Here is a senario. I need to mount a tv on the wall because my little guy is starting to walk.  What should i do with the crap i have around the tv tho?  I got ps3, dvd player, sling box and cable box.  Any idea?  I mean i can run cables left and right but should i use some kind of enclosure to stick these in?

how about an entertainment unit with a glass door? at least something that's tricky for a little one to open.

I hate mounting TVs, usually for the fact that I have a ton of stuff hooked up and its just not practical or asthetic to have them all hanging down the sides of the TV.

Why not fit a bracket over the base so it cant be moved or tipped?

I've got a scar above my right eye from running into those when I was 2. Kid walking + Glass = not a great idea.

Maybe something with a wooden door, worst case scenario he wonks his head.

In dunno about your TV, but mine came with anchors to attach the top to the wall with steel cord; prevents tipping.

With most wall mounts, a decent installer will cut a hole in the wall to route the cables or install a plate and house all the devices in nearby cabinet. You may need an IR repeater.

Of course if you want to change how any of it is wired afterwords....

Get something with doors that either latch or can be locked?

I have something similar to this. Works pretty well and you can route the wiring through the support pillar. Will post the exact one I have when I get home.

Re: Mounting Tv on the wall - Squishy3 - 01-07-2009

well, you can trash the dvd player to make space if you wish since ps3 does play dvds and upconverts them to boot (unless you need something old people friendly :p)

Cablesnakes are pretty useful, just this tube cut through the middle and turns all your cables into one big cable,
you could go the heavy construction route and cut through the drywall from your tv to your consoles, hide the wires behind the drywall and replace the piece/repaint/re wallpaper, thus completely hiding the wires... wouldn't be a good idea if tend to rearrange your stuff though

Well here we back with thesame problem... little guy hitting everything with his head.
Ikea is a good idea tho.  i have to look in to it.  As far as cabeling goes.  I found a great site that has pretty much any cable you could need for very little price.  So i think that will work out good. I ll need 2 hdmi cables 3 sets of component cables and a set of rca cables for... i dont know future speakers or something hahaha.

Yeah kids tend to do that. Best thing you can do is just keep a close eye on him, it's impossible to completely baby proof a house without taking down the walls.

Buying stuff from Ikea is like paying for something that will break when...

Okay I tried to think of something witty but I haven't had any sleep. Ikea stuff, especially their entertainment centers/tv stands, are usually low quality and tend to break/tip/fuck up a lot. If you're going to buy something the rule of getting what you pay for definitely applies in concern to entertainment/media stands.
