RROD Fix - Mission Difficult - 01-24-2009

So my 360 shit it's pants a few months ago and it happened to be out of warranty, so I went ahead and followed this guide. Amazingly enough, it worked! So instead of spending $150 on getting it repaired, I spent $5.00 on some screws and washers. So far  I've only had it on for about a half hour, but I'll be sure to report if it holds out.

Good to hear it worked out for you. MS has lost millions on this problem.
I'll have to keep it in mind if I have problems.

Serves them right for doing shitty QA because they wanted to beat everyone to the next-gen punch...

So I've had the thing in use for a few hours and no problems aside from the fans being way too loud. They weren't this bad before, so I'm thinking something isn't right. Might take it apart and re-apply the dielectric. Thought I did a pretty good job, not too much, not too little. Maybe I'll just stuff the fucker in a box and forget about it.

That's what she.... said?? ???

Re: RROD Fix - CaffeinePowered - 01-26-2009

Take the whole thing apart and mount it in a new case with good air flow.

The design flaw partially being they stuck the GPU directly under the fucking DVD reader, where there's no airflow what so ever and where it gets hot reading the disk as well.

Re: RROD Fix - copulatingduck - 01-26-2009

GPU in my old box I gave to a friend died so this wouldn't help at all. Then again, it's not technically a RROD so...

[/quote]I blame the Mechanical Engineer who didn't do the thermal design properly. Although he probably _did_, and some asshole in a suit told him to ditch the fan he wanted to put in there, or to make the heatsink smaller because the metal costs too much.

Re: RROD Fix - hawtpawkithero - 02-16-2009

I've taken apart like 10 xboxes 360s so far, about 6 of them have been to fix RROD's for friends. The penny-electrical tape trick seems to work the best for me.

I tend to end up flashing their DVD Firmware while I'm at it, and I throw in a few burnt games.
