I.E. just trying to button mash his way through combat when this is an RPG that is all about planning, getting involved in the world and towns to learn the local area, creature weakness, etc then using this knowledge to overcome a hard obstacle. Sure the game doesn't explain this well but this is an RPG series that you should go into knowing that. Pretty sure jim just tried to play it like it was DA2, got frustrated and then decided he didn't like the game but was forced to play it for review (which he actually stated in his review). Sucks that pretty much no one at dtoid has a PC anymore except jim, who vastly prefers console gaming anyways.

A lot of the "PC" review type people on dtoid staff do dtoid as a small side gig, and thus almost never review games from what I've seen, and only do some light side-posting news sadly. |
Yup. Witcher 2 gets a 6 while DA2 gets a higher score. I know Jim didn't review DA2 but still. I've liked Kotaku reviews the most (at least until they changed the review format, but they're still leagues betters than other sites) but the old review system was baller and really told you if you would like a game or not. Jonathon Holmes is still awesome too, hope he does another 45 minutes left in E3 video this year. |
All-in-all, video game reviews at this point are kind of useless due to dilution of the system. At some point in the last ten years, developers and review sites have found a way to keep each other happy with advertising revenue. Site gets money to generate salary, game gets good reviews, everyone's happy. This was made abundantly clear after that one instance at gamespot. It's a shame really, it's hard to depend on anyone for honest game reviews. At least movie reviews aren't like that...yet. |

The game has gotten a lot better, especially after I learned how to plan for combat. Still buggy as hell though.

I'm convinced this is one of the best and worst games ever released. So awesome but there is a lot that needs to be fixed.

Yeah it's pretty awesome but alot of the problems with are are pretty minor issues for me overall, or issues that are irrating but don't really take away from the core game. The inventory is horrible for instance, but at the same time its perfectly functional as is, even if I have to exit all the way into the game in order to go into another menu. The combat balancing is also kinda whack, but it still remains fun. The Kayran boss for example kinda showed to me that they didn't really put much thought into making that a balanced boss fight since you are pretty much required to die 10 times from insta-kill hidden deaths before you figure out the arbitrary spot you are supposed to hit (and this is with all the pre-battle stuff prepaired too, to fight it). Still playable, fun and definatly feels old school RPG in a new school skin, but it would really shine with that extra level of forethought and polish in some of the more subtle elements that they dropped the ball on. |

President Obama visited Poland and the Polish Prime Minister presented him with a couple of gifts from his country. One of them was collectors edition of The Witcher 2. Obama also recieved some books by Andrzej Sapkowski, author of The Witcher books. In Poland, this game is a very big deal.

I finally completed The Witcher 1. It was awesome. Now I can begin The Witcher 2.

Argh, just realized by going with Roach in Act 1 I completely miss out on seeing the dwarven city of Vergen in Act 2Â >

My plan to play Witcher 1 first is a success, already 2 patches and I'm having a good time with the first one.

Ok I just got my copy from Amazon (bought it from there instead of Steam so I could get free shipping on my $5 HDMI cable, lol). Â Can't play it until my new laptop gets here, but wow there's a lot of stuff in the regular edition of the game. Â For $39.99 (E3 promo) you get the game (and a full manual, not that 1 page cheap stuff a lot of games do these days) + world map (big, double sided) + a full separate GAME GUIDE + bonus materials DVD (dev diaries & stuff) + soundtrack cd + some other stuff (letter, coin, papercraft). Â If this was a console game it would probably be $79.99 (literally double the price). Â :o

I got my copy on preorder from amazon, and just cause I did that I get a $10 promo credit on my next purchase (have to use it within two or so weeks, but I just used it twoards another preorder). So right off the bat, essentually I get a new game for $40. Then because my copy was late 2 days from the "release day shipping" I picked, I got a full refund. |

Is it bad that the first thought I had after finishing The Witcher was "Now I can finally free up 20 gigs on my hard drive?"

I picked this up (numba 2) on steam sale based on a lukewarm recommendation. I just finished chapter 1.
I think this is the most enjoyable RPG I've played since Morrowind. It's a bit more on rails (since things are broken up into chapters), but I don't feel nearly as railroaded as Mass Effect 2 (which, while great fun and all, was more of a movie than a RPG). |
