When I have no money, I find myself sitting outside the local Barnes and Noble with a notebook. Not a notebook computer, but your standard, wide-rule, spiral-bound notebook.
I will write in it left-handed, even though I am not a southpaw. People look at me funny as I struggle to make letters that fit within two lines. I often yell things at them to get them to leave me alone. The mean stares are too much to handle usually.
One day this paid off. I met a nice lady, she said she helped disabled children for a living. She took me to Wal*Mart, where we bought Velcro shoes and ate ice cream cones from their McDonalds - I had sprinkles on mine. When she gave me a ride home, I offered to invite her up for a glass of milk and some Oreos. She accepted.
We sat in my apartment, on the couch, I was smiling so big, I couldn't help myself - my legs crossed, top leg shaking back and forth with the Velcro pulled tight. I should tell you, they weren't really Oreos, they were the generic kind, one half was black and the other was cream colored - I was poor, remember?
She stopped me, mid-cookie and told me that I had some crumbs on my face. I said "Uh-oh" like anyone in my position would, but I accidentally spit cookie on her. She smiled a bit and said, "let me get that for you." She un-tucked and lifted the corner of her blouse, taking it to the side of my mouth and wiping. Her hand let the blouse go and then her index finger was pressed against my lips.
Like instinct, I knew what I had to do, I got up and ran to my bedroom screaming. With my head under the pillow I could hear her at my door, "Matthew, are you ok?"
I started to cry, "my naughty parts feel funny."
She walked further into the room, "let me see what's wrong."
I turned around and rubbed my crotch. She smiled and said, "I have one of those too."
