Mass Effect never even struck me as a good game in the first place. I will probably never play ME2.
You see, I've never really understood why Psychonauts is considered a masterpiece. I mean, I enjoyed it and it was definitely worth $10...but I've never really known why people froth at the mouth when they glorify its existence.
Because it's one of the best examples of interactive storytelling outside of adventure games. RPGs are full of grind and adventure games can have a narrow audience, but through a platformer a game was created that balanced fun and innovative (at the time) gameplay with solid storytelling and humor. It's like being a part of a movie.
Psychonauts definitely does not have innovative gameplay and didn't even when it was released. However, it's still a great traditional platformer, has an original, hilarious story, and has great visual design.
When I mean gameplay innovation I don't think I mean the same thing you are thinking of. But the setting, manner of presentation, and objectives of the levels were pretty mindblowing to me. I mean you go into crazy people's heads to solve their problems. You get to be godzilla! |
