I told Luin about this, so I'll repeat it here as I am pleased.
I used that cheap way to look around deeper into your map, the thing with the sand and all. It lead me to an even more massive tunnel complex than the last one I found. It includes a huge lava spring pool that I'll have to come back to mess with at some point. I also found quite a bit of gold, more iron...and Obsidian! In fact, it's a spot I can farm Obsidian I think. I also realized that the whole complex I've found (which is near my spawn) is just way to huge... so I've started making & using signs. Damn shame you can't stack em tho. Nice house~ I think I'll have to expand and fix up mine. It's kinda a half-assed hovel now. But I've got a nice cavern I dug out into a sheer cliff face that I'll expand into tonight I think...after I explore more. And with strange aeons, even Death may lay down in the street and die.

Spent abit of time a week or so ago trying to get one of those interesting map designs and finally got one that had a huge mountain near the spawn, where it so massive, hitting cloud high, but also had a huge chunk of the inside missing. I just finally got around to turning the inside into...THE MAN CAVE. Almost have the roof done, I dug a backdoor to a cavern and exit in case I'm over-run by zombies.

how do you make roofs? I made a path to an island which I extended with hill bits then I built a wall around it to begin a house. I can't place wood in midair but there must be some way to make roofs.
