The aparent focus on safety in this thread both disgusts and offends the soldier in me.

anyone know the difference between the muscle groups worked during pull-ups wherein your head is held behind the bar as opposed to in front of it?

I'm having a hard time visualizing what the pull-ups you're talking about look like. I know of the standard pull-ups...is the other one where you start off with your head pushed under and in front of the bar (behind the neck pull-ups?)?

I've never tried the behind the neck pull-ups but I've seen a few videos of it. I think standard pull-ups work your latissimus dorsi muscles more (+ longer range of motion) than the one where you push your head in front of the bar; because for the latter, you are contracting your upper back completely (a good workout for your trapezius muscles I suppose) from a fully extended position and once your head gets under the bar, it appears that you would start using more of your shoulder support muscles (rotator cuff) for strength rather than your lats. Of course your rotator cuff is not as strong as your lats so I would think stress will also be put upon the neck extensor muscles to compensate for strength...which can't be healthy in the long run.

I've found a website article that explains pull-ups more eloquently than me but I don't know if what they're saying is true.

I need to start running again. I've found a good running shoe is a must. I love my Newtons.

Have you tried barefoot running? C:

My wife has vibrams. The shoes I use are a hybrid, they have lugs on the front where you would land if you were running barefoot properly. This trains you to run on the front of your feet. So theoretically I could transition to barefoot but I'm too much of a wuss haven't tried it yet.

Awful weather the past few days, so finally got another run in with the nice cool day. Only managed 1.82 miles this time, but given that it was coming off a work day and my 1.9 was from a well-rested Sunday, I'm okay with this.

I'm planning on signing up for two 5Ks this year. One is the Madison Mini Marathon in August and the other one is the Berbee Derby on Thanksgiving. Madison mini is still tentative since I might actually be vacationing during that time and currently waiting for berb derbs reg to open up.

I took a pretty long hiatus from running recently but I am starting to get back into a regular running schedule again.
Yesterday was 5 miles.

I haven't run as much as I've wanted to, either, but still keeping it going, at least. I had a setback and did a few more Week 3 runs. Got back up to Week 4 and had my longest overall yet (2 miles). Going to try a couple more Week 4s at least and see if I feel up for Week 5. Unfortunately the weather and other life events have prevented me from a regular schedule, hopefully things open up, but we're going to hit the peak of summer heat soon, so that'll make things a challenge.

Hey I restarted C25K this summer because last time I finished it I was doing it entirely on a treadmill at pussy speeds. Entering week 3 now.

Sounds like precisely the speed at which one would want to go.

yeah, my ass could never keep a 6min pace.  Best I ever did was 6:30, and that was the first mile of a 5k.
