Clearly it went over well, and as a good gauge of how well it went over, here's Sony's stock:

Consoles are bad for the games development market.
They limit hardware capability enforcing that games developers limit the capabilities of their games and their engines to ensure that they are able to run on these platforms. This also creates a larger gap in higher end gaming components for computers, as the lesser sales of the high end computing equipment means the hardware manufacturers have to recoup their costs. If high end computing equipment was more frequently bought then there would be a market competition and a need to reduce the cost. Now that i have said that. I grew up with a Nintendo, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, and even a Game Boy SP. I also had a Sega Genesis (16 Bit). I loved my consoles. I loved the games on them. But console exclusivity, and "console compatibility" is bad for the overall market. It also forces a situation in which the developers ignore the possibly alternate hardware specifications of users and when a console game DOES get ported to PC it does so poorly or buggy due to the fact that; "Hey, it worked on the XBox". I will also point out that within this household is a Wii (first gen, before WiiMotion + even came out), a PS3, and an XBox 360. None of them gets played saved as for general media devices. And we already pay a cable and internet subscription fee in the household, I don't wish to pay another one. Consoles are bad for the games development industry, and games market, as well as PC Sales, and PC Market. In fact, if it were NOT for consoles (and Tablets), Windows 8 would not be so much a fiasco as it is, due to the fact that they are trying to make it "friendly interface across all platforms". Rant off. |

I'm not a fan of the design. It reminds me of a laserdisc or VHS player from the 80s. Not in a good way either. Retro before it's cool to be retro.

And... it's done.
http://kotaku.com/you-will-be-able-to-tr...-509140825 Here's how the system works: when you buy an Xbox One game, you'll get a unique code that you enter when you install that game. You'll have to connect to the Internet in order to authorize that code, and the code can only be used once. Once you use it, that game will then be linked to your Xbox Live account. "It sits on your harddrive and you have permission to play that game as long as youâd like," Harrison said. But what if you want to bring a game disc to a friend's house and play there? You'll have to pay a feeâand not just some sort of activation fee, but the actual price of that gameâin order to use a game's code on a friend's account. Think of it like a new game, Harrison says. |

He says there's no fee to play games at a friend's house as long as you're signed in on your profile, which is the same process as it is now for downloaded stuff on the 360, except with physical games now. He also says that you will be able to trade in and resell games, but we'll see how that pans out. |

I like the design of the thing. It's a black plastic box with vents and some texture variation. Not beautiful or unique looking, but it's not over-designed bullshit either. It would be smart of them to ship it with a plastic stand of some sort as well.

I'm assuming that you'll still have to pay to use the online service?

Asides from all the problems that's been discussed to death, there are two things about this system I'm most curious about. First are those force feedback triggers that controller has. If you think about it, force feedback really hasn't been innovated on since Nintendo launched the Rumble Pak way back in 1997. The only difference between then and now is that it's built into the controller and some things have two of em. I'm hoping this kinda thing becomes a standard somehow, or at the very least, I'll be able to plug it into my computer for any cross-platform games that support trigger rumble on PC.
Second is just what kind of things would be possible using that new kinect sensor. Modders have already made some really interesting systems using the first one, from tracking your body for VR purposes, using it as a 3D object scanner, or even mapping an entire house using a kinect with a GPS mounted on a small robot. A higher FoV kinect with a resolution so high that it can actually read your heartrate by looking at your skin could do some amazing things in the right hands (or absolutely horrifying things in the wrong hands). As far as the presentation, Microsoft already admitted to dropping the ball by not showing enough games and said they have much more in store for E3. The problem is first impressions are everything, and unless they really impress everyone with their "bunch of exclusives" they said they have, Sony and Microsoft might just end up switching positions this generation. As someone who thinks that box looks ugly as hell, and with the entire presentation being about TV...no thanks. I'll stick with Sony, Wii U, and PC gaming. Infact, this sums up my thoughts. :

I think the style harkens all the way back to these days, like Evil said:
Looks like two different consoles glued together. And consoles are slowly becoming PCs anyway. It's got an x86 CPU an runs Windows: the definition of a gaming PC. As such, I am viewing this as the death of the console and the birth of the High-end HTPC. And if I were in the market for one for my home theater, the One is a pretty damn attractive HTPC. But I think we can all agree, it is not a game console. And Microsoft has been on a trend recently. A trend of trying to give people what they think is best as opposed to what people want, regardless of whether it is better or not. Maybe in 3 years people will love what the One is/will become, but right now at this moment people want a box they can put Call of Duty in and play online: a console. re: wii U, At least it is still a plain and simple console. And a fun one at that. |
