The multiplayer is run by a new service that IDW is hosting, which seems to be a matchmaking service like what consoles have, maybe equating it to Battle.Net or Steam, but there are no dedicated servers at all, so nothing is player run and there will be no custom maps or mods as much as I can tell, though they didn't explain everything about it other than it will essentially "reshape the PC community"...by making it more like the console community...which needs to become more like the pc community lol

[/quote]epic did it right, on ut3 for ps3 they let you host a dedicated server that ps3 players could play on, and mouse and keyboard support was built into the game. they also let you search for people who were playing with mouse and keyboard or controllers.

They forgot one key fact, they forgot to include fun when designing UT3

Dammit if the game doesn't have some swell mods though.

Well, call me a stubborn bastard, but the whole $60 price point, lack of special editions for the PC and now this crap of no dedicated server support, I've pretty much lost all interest. I'll get it later when it goes on sale for $30 or if Infinity Ward ever decides to get their heads out of their arses and support the community that brought them up right.

Alittle more talk about the system by FourZeroTwo, but still nothing that'll make the PC community all that more excited by it, since it's basically just a bit more customizable version of a console setup.  Consistent pings and less hackers are nice, but a good server and solid admin could do the same and it could be run with mods and custom maps.

How can you create a community when it's just PUB matches or playing with close friends?  I wouldn't have met alot of my steam friends if it weren't for playing on dedicated servers and playing with them alot of times, then joining the community after playing for awhile with them.  Playing a couple maps with someone isn't gonna really do the same thing.

It would be nice if they could do a dual setup and have normal matchmaking for the casual folks that don't care and then a server browsing option for dedicated servers for those that want to run the servers themselves.

Exactly. After reading their explanation for their sudden change of plans, I do get what their trying to do and for some part, sorta agree. What I don't get is why they just can't do what Valve did with l4d and allowed both matchmaking for those who just want to join a game and a server browser for those who want to play in a specific server. Just allow custom dedicated servers as an alternative to matchmaking and I'll gladly pay them $50 for the game. $60 is still gunna be a bit iffy, because if we allow that to slide, what's to stop others from doing this in the future?

Do online petitions ever work?  They already know lots of people are against the idea and canceling pre-orders.  They'll know things maybe should be reconsidered when PC sales for the game aren't what they were hoping for or expecting.

Well, seeing how there are over 100k who aren't buying it because of something as simple as dedicated server support, a reasonable company would simply add the option. That's $5 million that they're loosing (provided that number truly is accurate).

Um, L4D was a huge abortion of a system, sure there's a browser, but most players don't even know it exists, let alone use it

Old HL1 had a little button called 'Quick Match' that would just simply find the server with the best ping that had >X number of people playing in it, Im sure you could further refine the algorithm if you wanted to however, I think they fail to understand a really critical point. Most people that still play PC games, tend to be the more "hardcore" (and I use that term loosely) crowd that wants things like server browsers and mods. Casual people that "just want to put a disk in and play" bought a console a long time ago.

I saw this interview from a gentleman who left (or was fired, I don't know) Infinity Ward. It's from shortly before CoD4 was released. Man, how things have changed.

Call of Duty 4 -- PC vs. Console Interview

Edit: And the background music in this video totally makes it sound like a patriotic speech.
