This is not the same game i got when i was younger (pokemon)

So yeah... I just got Platinum and I have no clue what everything is with all the fancy IVs and EVs and such.  Anyone care to tell me what all of that stuff is? (last game i played was gold)

Also, the rival in this game needs some Ritalin or something. The starting town looks a lot like pallet town, too.

EVs- Effort Values. Gained whenever EXP is gained. Each Pokemon can have 510, with a max of 255 in each stat. 4 points= 1 stat point at Lvl100. As such, only fill the EVs up to 252. Ignore them until you beat the E4.
IV- Individual Values. 1 for each stat, between 1-31, with 31 the best. The game will tell you what the value of 1 may be. "Mischievous, Likes to Run," etc. Ignore until you get into breeding.
Natures- Boost one stat, sub another. There are also neutral natures which do nothing to stats. Also influences type of poffin liked. In general, don't ignore this.
Different from previous games, a specific type isn't physical or special. Some Fire moves are now physical, and some normal type moves are special. Also note that some attacks make direct contact, which might trigger an opponent's ability, and others may be based on sound, which might make them ineffective against some Pokemon with a certain ability. Some cause a weather change, boosting and weakening certain types (Fire is powered up by Sunny Day and weakened by Rain Dance, visa versa for Water), modifying certain moves (Blizzard always hits in Hail, Solar Beam is one turn in Sunlight, Thunder always hits in Rain), and triggering certain abilities (Sand Veil boost evasion in Sandstorm).
Abilities are characteristics that certain species have. For example, boosting evasion in Sandstorm weather, causing a certain weather to occur, or making them more resistant to fire and ice.

Except not even, because with regular battles, you have the option to switch out your pokemon before the opponent does, and that gives you such a big advantage ev's, iv's, and natures hardly matter anymore.

However, in player vs player mode, you don't get that luxury. And thats why its all so more important.

You should still make sure to not get a nature that subs an important stat, even during gameplay.

Also, Chimchar is fine.
Double the also, in my experience, starters from the professor tend to be of a neutral nature. Same goes for any other Pokemon given to you by the game (Eevee, Porygon).

don't worry i am obsessive about collecting things, so i will get it. thats part of the reason i have yet to face the first gym leader. (others being training and getting tires for my car).
