It's weird, you almost have to play the game to get it but the system really fits with the overall construction of the game and a system like you are describing would likely detract. The game has a very interesting interaction with people when played online. You constantly see ghosts of people playing the same area at the same time. Sometimes you will see them in trouble or even die and you will know to be wary at that point. There are messages and they may be helpful or they may be traps. You touch blood spatters of where others have died and watch a ghost re-enact their deaths. You can invite people into your game or they can invade at will (I had someone invade my game but he never found me). They can also challenge you to a duel or offer their services to you. This sets a very unique and interesting tone to the game because you have the feeling of both co-operation and danger from players you are constantly sensing and occasionally interacting with. The fact that you do not know if they are good or evil or just inept adds dramatically to the feel of the game and being able to call upon friends at will would shatter that.

So after you beat the phalanx demon do you have to use the blue stone in order to go online from there on out?  I just beat 1-2 and I didn't see any blood stains or anything while I played.

Also, I've come to realize that the bosses are a lot easier to fight than the enemies.  A pack of wolves was harder to take down than a giant dragon :/

Also, the Royalty class owns.  I had a hard time starting off but once I beat the first area and got to allocate my points I've become quite the hero.  I almost went through 2-1 without dying until a pack of wolves pounced on me

Your starting class doesn't do much in the long run but being able to choose your initial path by being a royal helps a lot. Although magic kinda pwns in this game so I got through some tough stuff using soul arrows and hiding so I shouldn't complain.

I just pumped my strength up enough to use all the good stuff I want. The winged spear also rocks. Make sure you get to the better blacksmith in 2-1 before you start upgrading anything good, I have a winged spear that poisons now.

Also tragic it sounds like you aren't connecting to the network properly, blood stains should be everywhere. Same with messages and ghosts. And yes blue stones are needed to get into other people's games.

Yeah I noticed that after i posted it.  Seems like I did lose connection the second time i played.

I'm just going the dex/int/magic route for my Royalty character.  I started to upgrade my winged spear but I think I need to upgrade a slashing weapon too in case I counter something that is impervious to pierce damage (but then I could probably just fall back on my magic).

Also, to reiterate, wolves suck.  They are so quick and there is always at least 2 of them.

What class did you start off as surf?

I wouldn't think it would be too bad since magic owns in this game so far, but yeah I can imagine it being tough with out a bit of muscle behind you

Yea there are a couple key stats that are lacking in the magician build, mostly strength to use equipment and faith to use miracles. Then you pump up the cost to level up filling them out  :-\

This game owns though, I played some this morning before I went to work.

So I must have locked in over 4 hours of gameplay just on zone 2-2 alone.  Apparently fighting bugbears drains your mana pretty easily and I have to sit idly by while my mana recharges to take them back down

Yes I love my fragrance ring but I feel cheap that when fighting bugbears or other "slow" enemies I can run off and leave my guy idle until I regain enough mana.  Oh well.

Also, is it just Surf and I that are playing this awesome game?

So I found out something harder to fight than wolves:  3 Red Eye'd Knights with spears/lances.

If I knock one off guard with a spell the other seems to run in front of the knight who is vulnerable and absorbs the next spell.  Very annoying

A friend brought over his PS3 so I got to play it for like 5 hours. It's like one of my favorite games this generation now

In other words, my hastiness and my arrogance is getting the best of me.  I've been on good runs of not dying and then I'll die repeatedly because I think I can just rush right through like I did before.  And now I lost my 30k souls that I had because I died before I could reach them

Edit:  I have now learned the limitations of magic.  I got to kill this blue dragon and at the second stage of the fight against it I can't seem to get close enough to hit with my soul shot (or whatever its called).

It has unique online interaction.
It's one of the best RPGs I have played in a while
