Post your favourite Android apps here and why you like them so much. For those of you that don't know if your phone runs android, there is a full list here.

My favourites (I'm only listing stuff that wasn't included with the phone):
  • Locale - This is so bloody handy, it changes settings according to your location. For now I have it set to lower my ringtone volume when I'm at work or at home and pop-up astrid todo's when tagged for home and office. When I get some more time I'll add more common locations.
  • Astrid - A simple yet complete todo/task manager which works so well that I quite like using it. It also integrates with locale so that location bound tasks will popup when you're at a certain location. Furthermore it synchronizes very well with Remember the Milk.
  • Shazam - A very cool app that checks the song that's playing and tries to identify it, not fool proof but oh so handy.
  • Google Sky Map - This app has quite a 'wow' factor. You point it at the sky and using the GPS, accelerometer and compass it shows you where the stars, planets and moon are. It's quite fun at night.
  • Layar - This is another big 'wow' factor app. You point your camera somewhere and it overlays a layar of your choosing over the camera input. It can show you where ATMs near you are, landmarks, stuff which has wikipedia entries and lots more. The latest version added 3d models layers and someone already added the beatles on the crosswalk of abbey road.
  • ScummVM for Android - All those classic adventure games, playable on your phone, need I say more?

I'm considering writing my own android apps when I get some good ideas.

So, what are your favourite android apps?

Not too hard but afaik verizon didn't cripple their droids because of iphone envy.

That's what they said with the last phone I had....nope....want to back up my phone list, that costs extra, what to extract pictures, nope, you need to upload them to this website then download them (internet costs extra), want to use MP3s as ringtones or play them? - you need to buy them from our store, oh and those files are specially flagged so you can't use your own.

God I hate Verizon

Hmmm, from all the DROID reviews I've read (I have a hero myself) it seems those issues are all resolved as it's a "google experience" phone. This means that your contact list is synced with google contacts and the android OS is fully unlocked. I might not like how apple has treaten the iPhone but apple had the power to say "you're going to offer the phone how we want to or we'll take our business to someone else" to AT&T which made all those US shenanigans harder to get away with. I only recently found out about the amount of money grubbing crap providers tried over there, here they just give us connectivity and nothing more.

Other than a computer (which isn't technically a christmas present), I mostly just want a Droid.

I tried a G1 at launch and then again 4 months later and returned both. I couldn't live with 2-3 hour battery life. BlackBerry has spoiled me with 2 day battery life (and keyboard). That said, I hope android devices (and os) continue to get refined. I want believe.

My hero does more than a day with heavy use, 2-3 hour life would be unacceptable to me as well... The G1 is a first generation android device though, it's bound to have been very rough around the edges. I quite love my hero though, it's quite refined while the G1 looked a bit too rough.

Meanwhile T-Mobile has done that with every phone long before the droid was even announced.

Got an env3 today.  Verizon didn't charge me anything to transfer shit; they were very nice.  So I dunno what you're talking about caff.

On an unrelated note, the dude working there sounded exactly like pigmask.  He talked exactly like pigmask.  I bet I creeped him a bit because like the entire time I was staring at him with a O_O face, thinking "WHY IS PIGMASK HERE."

Hmmmm, to those who bought a droid, whats the service cost per month for what you get?  I kinda want a better phone, but hesitant about costs.

<+Karrde> welp, time to learn some basic patterning skills
<@Negate> 12121212121212121212
<@Negate> there is a simple pattern
<+Karrde> I changed my mind.  Gonna cosplay as a gay demon from hell and get negate raped instead XD
<+Caffeine`work> Karrde: Gay demon? Why would you need to cosplay just go as yourself
<+FlyingMongoose> Caffeine`work: Karrde would actually have to tone it down some.

I think it's another $20-30 more a month for the data plan.
