[edit] Looks like you can still play up to Level 15 without paying at all. The entire inventory system has changed, in a way that encourages grinding, which I'm not sure I'm a fan of. The UI changes are nice though, as is the new gear although most of it is for upper-level players and/or subscribers only. Pass. [/edit]

They killed the sub and changed the pricing model to be more like Guild Wars, where they'll publish expansions for you to get access to additional paid content. Smart move, albeit a bit late.

is this game fun and not incredibly unbalanced gear-wise? im seeing this as a direct replacement for apb, which is incredibly unfun if you havent already leveled up and bought at least decent gear. plus the free to play sounds really nice

You gain access to gear as you level, it can be rough playing before you can access all of the standard gear for your class (which happens at level 29), but they take a 'not better. different.' approach for the most part. Gear you have access to at low-level is simply different and can actually still be useful at higher levels. It's tough to get a solid feel for how to play a particular class until you have access to all of the basic gear, but it doesn't take an inordinate amount of playtime to get to 30.

They have different versions of gear that have buffs, but they're usually not nearly as influential as how you spec your character, which can change literally as often as you want when you're not in a mission, and also doesn't reach its 'peak' until level 30 (when you earn the 13th skill point to distribute). Purple ('epic') gear is best, but you're only talking a 5-15% increase in effectiveness over base gear.

It also helps that mercenary (PUG) play is stratified, so people under level 30 play with other people under level 30, and vice versa.

I personally think they did a pretty good job of keeping things balanced, but certain playstyles are tough in PUGs (like healing medic) because you're so dependent on your teammates. Getting into a decent Agency and running with them often helps with that, although being able to change gear during a match and respec between matches means you can almost always adapt to your current situation if needs be.

I'd also like the point out that the Mercenary teams are limited to a 2 person party cap, which means you won't be getting your shit slapped by a bunch of dudes who know what they're doing. Also leveling up goes by pretty fast in the beginning levels (5-20) now that they've added the new outdoors area.
