So I recently decided to splurge and got myself a 360, and a new monitor.
Well it turns out that when my 360 is connected to a crt monitor, the colors and sounds work fine - but of course its not hi-def which is a waste and I can't read shit. But when connected to the vga port on 2 different monitors, it produces no green (resulting in a purple tint). At first I thought it was just the xbox to vga wire, but when I got another it was the same deal. Which begs the question, since my new monitor does have an hdmi port, will the xbox-hdmi cable work or will it fail?

What the shit is wrong with the vga port on this thing I don't understand. If it goes into a component just fine why would the vga still end up failing?
My tech-skills are god awful to understand this kind of thing.

I dont think thats possible because the cable isn't a converter in the sense. It only goes into the xbox on one end.

i would suggest just getting the hdmi cable, but the 360 hdmi cable from microsoft is like 50 bucks.

i'm sure a third party chord would be cheaper, but still not as cheap as a normal hdmi chord.

Xbox 360s can use any HDMI cable, so go with something like this.

huh, so they do. thought they were going to be dicks like they are with all of their other components.

That HDMI chord is also ridiculously overpriced.

Yeah it is, the problem is since the usual xbox plug dongle thing covers the hdmi port, people have to buy that pack to get the audio dongle, which doesn't cover the hdmi port.
I already broke away the plastic cover on my av cord that came with the 360 so it fits proper, and the hdmi cable has room to fit. Now I gotta wait for the cord to come in through the mail...
Also 90 cents for a fucking hdmi cable? Really? I'm pretty sure 4 quarters are worth more in material than that :/

I meant to link to this one, which is actually even more expensive, but it has free shipping. The problem is that the $0.01 cables have $3-5 for shipping.

I didn't even see that the origional link had been discounted from 44 dollars to .88 cents.  That's some kind of saving.

I found out that the hdmi port on the 360 is blocked by the regular plug (the xbox to vga/xbox to a/v composite). So I cracked open my xbox to a/v cable plug and it turns out its full of nothing but plastic.
PLASTIC that blocks the hdmi port. And microsoft is trying to sell me a 50 dollar audio dongle with the hdmi cable.

i believe it can, but most people tend not to have big fancy receivers in their homes. They just have the HDTV, some crappy surround sound system (at least it sounds better than the TV's onboard audio), and a console. so the idea is that it's more convenient to just give the audio a separate cable anyways, esp since a lot of consumers are completely and utterly bewildered with newer tech. Iirc, there was an article a couple years back that claimed something on the order of 30-40% of 360 and PS3 users had, but were not utilizing the HD in HDTV (everyman is a moran)

Yes, I guess that solves the problem of my monitor having no speakers.

I just assumed.  most of the monitors i have been looking at recently that have HDMI inputs also have  internal speakers.

To be fair, 98% of (newer) LCD's with HDMI are HDCP compatable
