Need help on new desk/room furnishings

So I'm in need of refurnishing my room within reasonable levels. Right now it just simply isn't as "inviting" and "productive" to me. I'd like for it to be a great place for me to relax, work on stuff on my computer, play games, and etc.

Currently I'm living off my old hand-me-downs from when I was a kid and it's done the job but I think I'm ready to upgrade my furnishings and perhaps add a bit of life to my room so it's a place I can be more comfortable in for myself and others who might hang out in the future there. Thing is, space is restricted so I feel like I don't have a lot of options.

Here is the room from the door perspective:

Orange = moveable/replaceable furniture

Brown = stuff I can't move (door, closet, window).

Note that the light switch controls the outlet located at the top left portion of the room so obviously whatever is there must be the main light source (therefore I cannot have the bed or any new computer desk located there).

Also I'd REALLY prefer to not have the computer be in the bottom left or top left sides of the room, due to privacy and space purposes.

The closet to the right also presents a problem... I can't really have anything there that will block my closet.

I though about moving it so the desk was located between the door and the closet, with the monitor facing twoards the window (I'd definatly need to get curtains though). Then behind the computer chair I'd maybe put in a loveseat or a comfortable chair to sit in in which to read/etc.

I'm thinking of completely axeing my dresser. I never use it, and I think it would be more useful to have a shelf of some sort there instead, with the laundry/clothes "neatly" organized in bins or something on the bottom half of the shelf.

So does anyone have any input?

What desks should I use? I love the look of L shaped desks but I simply don't have the corner space to support such a desk. Would one work out between my closet and my door with it facing twoards the window? I want a desk that is slightly more compact than my hand-me-down desk I currently use, but I don't want it so small I can't fit my large keyboard and my mouse on.

Any ideas for other furniture, shelving, etc? Anything else (such as wall decor, etc)?

Dude. Ikea. Seriously.

You've gotta have one around you somewhere. Just walk in there with a measuring tape and find stuff that looks good. They have a ton of affordable furniture of all shapes, sizes, and colors, and a lot of their furniture is meant to make the most out of a small space. Mos

The layout itself is a matter of personal preference and it honestly isn't too hard to move furniture around.

You have to get those walls and doors painted though, preferable in a light, uniform color in order to make the room seem larger. I highly recommend replacing those wooden closet panel things with ones that are mirrors, as that really makes small spaces seem brighter and larger.

Ikea also has a ton of wall decorations, light fixtures, rugs, and anything else you may want to add some light and color to the room.

Looks fine to me. Most of my family's bedroom furniture is Ikea, never had any defective parts or things falling apart.

Then again, you won't get the same quality sofa from Ikea for $300 as you would in a fancier store with sofas going $1500+.

Honestly though, I do recommend Ikea.

I have enough paint left over I think to cover the walls again with solid of that same color, and I agree it would look better at this point (my rear wall is solid, part of my indecisiveness of wither or not I liked the textured look). Of course that would be a huge pain in the ass to do - moving all the furniture out, spending a day painting, letting it dry for another day, etc... but yeah.

I was planning on fitting them out with wall decor and stuff like that though so they just were not *walls*. I have some prints I can put up on it, and was thinking about getting some wall sconce's to get more legit lighting going on.

Of course I don't really know where to start. I guess just spending a day at a hardware store like lowes or ikea or wallmart or something and making notes would do for a start

We were examining all the furniture there, all the cabinets were falling apart or flimsily built, handles pulling off, that kind of thing. But I've noticed that older furniture purchased from Ikea is significantly higher in quality than anything recent. My parents have a few things from there as well that are as solid as can be, but anything recent is NOTHING like it at all. It's taken a complete shit.

Uhhh....

You do realize that the store stuff is falling apart because it's assembled by the retards who work there? They don't give a shit if they use the wrong screw. That would be like looking at a rental car and saying "look at how awful this car manufacturer has gotten in the past X years! My parents used to own the previous model of this car and the paint wasn't scratched, the plastic wasn't faded, and there weren't mysterious stains all over the seat."

The reason your parents' Ikea stuff is solid is because they built it. I helped a friend put together some Ikea tables not to long ago for his apartment, and the materials and methods of putting stuff together are pretty much identical so far as I can tell. The finished product was solid and looked good.

As far as paint goes, paint it a light color, dammit! Uniform! Then cover it with whatever prints, posters, etc. you want. I recommend getting floating shelves up on your walls. Good extra storage, and it doesn't look half bad.

Don't mess with sconces unless if you want to do electric through the walls or have wires hanging down them. They don't put out much light either. I'd go for a good floor lamp (Ikea, again) or overhead lighting, if you can.

I like the darker green color for the paint, and I HATE pastel colors (aka "easter" colors) that are typical with light paint color schemes. Is there a good reason why lighter paint is better than darker colors? I really like the whole "cozyness" that darker color paint brings.

Its all about light reflection, darker colors make a room seem smaller than it actually is, lighter colors make it seem bigger
