in case anyone cares, I finally gave in and brought the system in to the Geek Squad.  He confirmed what I expected, I broke the board while putting the 24 pin into the board (testing other power supply that doesn't click in place so easy).

Embarrassing, but makes sense.  Good news is, the system underneath is pretty good and improves what I had by a lot.

New specs:
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4 ghz
4 x 1 gig DDR2 800 mhz (corsair)
HD4850  512 meg DDR3 vc

and waiting on my Gigabyte GA-EP43-UD3L  board to arrive...

Maybe I can stop using this PS3 java-based browser soon... ugh.  Thanks all for the help.  Now if I could find a better power supply...
