Not worth ten bux. Looks amazing and the writing's great, but I thought it was a game. You know, with gameplay or some amount of interactivity. If you're curious check out the mod, because I think the "deluxe" version isn't worth it.

Visual novels are big in Japan. Know what you do in them? Click to read dialogue, maaaabe make a choice on occasion. Dear Esther is the same, only better, with a well layered story that takes time to understand.

Sorry you couldn't appreciate the intricacies of it, Mr. Film Major.

Not sure if annoyed, or just tired because of lack of sleep.

It's a video game though, not a visual novel, and it has no gameplay. I could care less about the story being amazing, because this game was not fun in the slightest. It's a hour-long sightseeing tour while being narrated things that usually has very little to do with what you are doing at the moment, which counters with the stellar narration. It's not a game, and that's my problem.

Oh, and thanks for throwing "Mr. Film Major" in there. You know how much I brag about that.

Well, it's not a book is it? I'm judging it as a game because it was advertised to me as a game.

That's because it wouldn't work as a book, nor would it work as a movie. It was an experience that NEEDED to be in the form of a game experience, limited interactivity or not.

I feel the free version was totally misleading. It had guns and shooting and a gritty, hyper-realistic visual style. I knew it was hyper-realistic because of the orange filter. And a rivetting plot about stopping terrorists and evil Russian generals. I'm pretty sure Ester was the name of some super secret counter-terrorist unit or some shit like that. It also had a perk system and global rankings.

Oh wait my bad it didn't.

Anyway, I'll get this once it goes on sale.

So having play this, Karth, how could you possibly classify this as a game? This is 100% an interactive short novel, with visuals so rich and art so well realized that while traveling through the caves, subconsciously started thinking about foot placement. Multiple times did I stop just simply to look, applicate the view. Rarely have a played something with this high level of immersion.

This wasn't game. It's art.

Precisely why I didn't like it. I HATE the fact Dear Esther is completely linear in addition to having no gameplay elements. You just walk until you unlock the next part of the story. And as interesting as it may be, I don't recall other "art" games having to sacrifice gameplay for story or vise versa. Look, it's great you enjoyed it, but that doesn't change my mind.

I imagine a similar discussion would ensue if you went into a store selling DVDs/CDs and picked up a music album on accident instead of a movie.
