So a buddy of mine has been getting some error messages on his computer, they are as follows.

NTLDR: couldn't open drive multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)

and

windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrup: <Windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe

My google-fu seems to indicate that these arise from issues with a corrupted windows install or some hardware issues with the harddrive.

Anyway, if I could get a second opinion from you lot, that would be quite swell.

Oh, the computer is also running an install of Windows XP and has been running fine for a little over a year or so now.

Have you tried hooking the drive up to another working computer just to test if it can even be read or not?

The exact same error happened to me when an old HDD started to develop bad sectors. Wasn't fun.

I'd start with a vendor-supplied test disc, rule out hardware problems from the get-go.

[/quote]Supplied with the HDD?  Because I don't remember any disk with the HD when it shipped in.

No, no, they are supplied from the vendor.
Post the make/model of the drive and I'll link you to the appropriate software.

Ultimate Boot CD has a good selection of tools including brand specific HDD analysis tools (bundled all together )

Either way, it seems the Holiday season is the season of HDD problems this year Tongue
