Seattle, although you can use normal tires if you also have chains in your car and put them on when required.

So apparently back here in Saint Paul it rained last night or something.

Well, winter was fun while it lasted. Gunna go home with a light jacket since it's like about 25 degrees now.

Maine they're not necessary.  You can do just fine without them in almost all situations.
You just can't tow people out of ditches without them.

Definitely.  The hills there I imagine would be unpassable without snow tires.  Luckily it normally only snows there 1/4 years.

Indeed.  I've never owned winter tires and have been just fine.  Honestly, overall weight of the car and undercarriage clearance are much more important factors.

The biggest advantage I've encountered for winter driving are good winter tires. I highly recommend them, they are the only part that connects your vehicle to the ground.

Cost of proper rubber < Cost of understeering into a tree.

I almost understeered into the garage wall this morning... I was all like "hmmm, this slush doesn't look too thick."

P.S. I've noticed slush is about 5-110000000 times slipperier than ice on tarmac.

It's 50 degrees Fahrenheit here in Illinois. No snow on the ground due to a thunderstorm last night. I'll be spending my new year's eve outside. You jelly?
