Man, I leave for one day to work, and come back in the middle of a serious discussion. We need more blind patriotism up in here.

I'm here for some blind partriotism.

I'll just leave this here.

And, while I'm glad such a hate-filled person as Osama can no longer work to attack innocent people, I'm very disappoint he wasn't taken out silently*. The first rule of Wetworks is you do not talk about Wetworks.

*(well, aside from a trial, but that wasn't in the cards)

That's the thing. The govt. probably wants everyone to know we took him out. Be it for Obama's political rating/stature amongst the nations/proving points/ect. Why else would he make a big fucking announcement about it?

Now the real question for me is how Pakistan takes this news. The fact that we pulled a huge (in size) mission in their territory and it was made extremely public. Going to be an interesting month.
[/quote]

Pakistan has some splainin to do. It came out today that bin laden had been at that compound for at least the last 5 years. The pakis were either too incompetant to figure that out or they were in on it.

He was less than a dozen KM from the ISI headquarters as well, wasn't he?

Like they really didn't know about that. They aren't our fucking allies. We're just too pansy to step up and call this shit out in public. They have oil.

The more I hear about it, the more I agree with Rummy.  This is showing a distinct lack of Class.

I wouldn't really worry too much about the folks who don't agree with you. If they want to be happy about it, that's their call I guess. You aren't a terrorist sympathizer because you don't want to celebrate death.

I'm kind of ambivalent about this. I don't really think anything has changed except maybe Obama's chances of being re-elected. That article Rummy posted was right, we can't reclaim the pre-911 world, at least not yet.

No. Not oil. They are currently #57 on the list of proved oil reserves. behind such oil powerhouses as Guatemala, Equatorial Guinea, and Denmark.

The rumsfald intelligence network suggests the following: the Pakistani government did not know where OBL was hanging, but some elements of the ISI and Pakistani elite did know. It's no secret that the factions in Pakistan have been highly fractured. The Obama administration, in an infrequent move of grace, elected to NOT call out the incompetence and fractures in Pakistan right now in the same breath as the OBL mission. Rather, knowing the high propensity for leaks and/or tip offs, they moved first, alone, to wax OBL, and will try to help PK address the fractures and interior duplicity in the days/weeks to come. Now that OBL is gone, PK, a nuclear nation, will still play an important role in stabilizing Afghanistan and continuing to run down al Qaeda.

Also, India and Pakistan have been at each other for 50some years, and as the US position has been to not pick a winner in that fight, I don't think we're looking to change that now.

TLBig GrinR version: we downplay Pakistani incompetence, and in return they look the other way as we fly in and out of their country to headshot OBL

Back in country, Crow, it is clear that POTUS went for the easy domestic boost rather than gambling that a silent whack or, dareIsay, show trial would have boosted international cred.

I've seen dozens of flags and "9-11, NEVER FORGET" suddenly appear on cars the last two days, while the international outrage is minimal. Obama took the lay-up instead of the risky 3-pointer.

I don't agree with the choice to advertise and publicize extrajudicial slayings, but the majority of the world doesn't seem to care. That's politics.

yeah, i've seen a little bit of the ?huge celebration this is causing back home? which also shows a lot of class.

All I know, if I grabbed the trigger man who had just blown up some of my men 5 minutes before, disarmed him, and shot him in the head, I'd be going to Leavenworth.

Scuttlebutt hints at Pakistan taking a blind eye in exchange for support in upcoming conflict with a certain bordering power. /opsec.
