Valve just announced the first tournament, happening on August 17-21 with a prize of $1 million.  That's also the first time the public gets to see the game.  It's nice to see that Valve is actually trying to promote the game.

There is also a Steampowered store page now. I still think this is going to be free to play. And it's going to be absolutely massive. You see 3 million, maybe 3.5 million players on Steam concurrently now? I bet right when this hits it will pop up to 5 million at least.

   Dota 2 Beta client works only on a special watermarked steam version
   Game modes in Dota 2:
       Classic Mode: Just like original Dota
       Normal Mode: Orb system changes
       Easy Mode: No experience loss from denies. no money loss on death
       All Random All Mid: speaks for itself
       Fortress Mode: one team is attacking while the other defends. the defending team can buy traps, attacking team can buy minions
       Arena Mode: Free for all or team deathmatch
       Wild Mode: Random characters with random skillset
       Free Mode: No cooldowns and no mana cost on abilities
       Commander Mode: On death you are changed into another character with the same items and same level. The first team to run out of heroes or to lose their base loses the game.
   Lasthitting aids (deactivateable) creeps that are killable with one ordinary attack start to glow a bit
   Items are 1:1 copies from the original DotA but the Orb system has been reworked
   Shop was completely redesigned with some cool new features such as Auto-Buy Item X when you have Y gold
   Still STR/AGI/INT but most Int heroes have at least 1 spell that scales off their Int at least a little
   Classic mode game duration is very similar to original dota
   Easy mode games last about 20-30 minutes, similar to League of Legends games
   Animation cancelling will work the same way as in dota
   All dota heroes are ported over to dota 2
   Visual Artists of Team Fortress 2 and Portal work on the graphics
   All heroes have new models and art but are easily identifiable
   Right now there are 8 maps including a dedicated All Random All Mid map, a map which is only jungle with no lanes, a 3vs3vs3 map and a lot more
   It’s rumored that Dota 2 will not be free 2 play
   Jon St. John, the original voice of Duke from Duke Nukem 3D was hired for voice acting. Hopefully he acts for the ingame announcer voice
   There will be a playable demo @ gamescom 2011 and it’s said that a public beta will start soon after
   If you can run “Alien Swarm” you will be able to play Dota 2 since it has the same hardware requirements
   Testers say that the graphics look really awesome! Amazing particle effects and units and stuff are still clearly visible on the map
   There will be a tutorial for the game and for each hero. Also a training game mode for beginners will be included.
   Some features of the Dota 2 Launcher:
       Full native support for clans and tournaments
       Players and clans can create own tournaments with special rules
       Brackets for those tournaments will automatically be seeded regarding the team level
       Fully featured spectator mode for all public games
       Testers say it’s the most worked out and most professional launcher software they’ve ever seen
