New Graphics Card

I'm starting to feel the push lately and since I can't afford to go all out on a new computer with about 900 to 1000 bucks, I though I'd see if I could upgrade to something better right now till I eventually upgrade which may be late next year, if even then.

My mobo is an Asus P5k Pro that uses a PCI Express X16 slot and currently using a 512mb Radeon HD 4800 card.  Mostly asking, cause I'm a pretty out of the loop on things like the PCI Express 2.0 x16 type stuff and if that would still work on my mobo or not.

For a budget, I'm thinking like 200 bucks max. Any help would be appreciated.

PCIe 2.0 = 2.1

Don't even worry about it. Newer implementation goes faster, physical slot is the same and all devices work in all slots interchangeably.

i dont have a reccomendation for an ati card , sorting by pci 1.1 cards on new egg left me with one option.

Yeah same for me, since I thought I wasn't able to pick 2.0 cards for my mobo.  Looks like I might be stuck with what I have till I can upgrade my whole computer.

What part of 2.0 = 2.1 was unclear, the part where they're the same? if not that, how about the "and all devices work in all slots interchangeably." part?


Do you panic if you plug a USB 1.1 thumbdrive into a 2.0 slot too?

Being so Wiki-read I figured you would have noticed the following:

PCIe 2.0 motherboard slots are fully backward compatible with PCIe v1.x cards. PCIe 2.0 cards are also generally backward compatible with PCIe 1.x motherboards, using the available bandwidth of PCI Express 1.1. Overall, graphic cards or motherboards designed for v2.0 will work with the other being v1.1 or v1.0

Thank you, that's all I was asking for.  All I saw was the 2.0 = 2.1, nothing about regular PCIE slots working with 2.0/1 cards.  I'll go about hunting for a new card then, see what I can afford.  

I've been using Radeon for abit, but hearing that Battlefield 3 was designed around Nividia stuff more, would it benefit me to grab a Nvidia one instead and should I see a reasonable boost in performance if I'm getting a 1gb or up card over my 512mb Radeon HD4800?

Here's two I found.  Within my price range, generally the same aside from some minor differences, both come with the new Batman game free.  Just figured I'd see if anyone would pick one over the other before I go about buying one, though I'll probably lean towards the Asus one, having alot more good reviews.

Research for both if they have lifetime warranty. Im sure cafe will come and extolled the virtues of this it may cost you 20 more bucks but it'll pay off 5 years down the road when the company is sending you a new top line vid card.

They both say about a 3 year manufacturers warranty on them, with only a 2 year one for labor on the MSI card, according to the specifications page.

this was the only one i could find that matches what you posted up there but with a lifetime warranty. i can't say im too familiar with Sparkle as a manufacturer , so unless you really like unicorns im not sure i'd go with it. probably recommend this to a MLP fan instead.

I don't know what your motherboard issues are, but I'd recommend getting a nVidia card at this point. The only reason ATI was the better choice about a year ago is because nVidia had horrendous issues with the fermi cards. Now that they've got their crap together, it'd probably be worth it.

I'm liking the PNY one, even if it is pushing my budget. So with this lifetime warranty, down the road if it breaks down, I'll be able to get a brand new current spec card, since they won't just replace what is considered an old card by then?

Fuck, I go to buy the PNY one and it's out of stock lol So much for getting that one.  Can't say I like the Sparkle one either.  Brand I never heard of, no reviews...Might just go back to the ASUS one.
