So I built myself a Geiger counter.

I used the very affordable, very well designed and well documented kit from John Giametti, https://sites.google.com/site/diygeigercounter/
Atomic Dave (http://myworld.ebay.ca/atomic.dave) provided me with a nice LND712 GM-tube.

I started with this:

and two hours later, I ended up with this:

I ordered the kit with a LCD, but I haven't attached it yet. I plan to build a nice case with buttons and switches, and will wait until then.

So, why a Geiger counter?

Because a scintillation counter was too expensive to make.

In HeK's world, this was a perfectly rational, measured response.

So, why own a Geiger counter?

Apparently some of my possessions are radioactive.

Additionally I own a cabin in the Canadian Shield, located between gold and uranium mines. We do a lot of rock hunting in the area for smokey quartz and garnets, so it makes sense to monitor for exposure.

I think I designed a case?

Guess I'll see how it turns out.
