Well, a time that I had hoped would never happen has come.

My parents are getting kicked off the farm.

We knew for awhile that things were not as comfortable between my family and the family we worked for as they had been in the past. But my dad had been given a promise that, when he retired this year, we'd be allowed to stay.

A few weeks ago they went back on that promise and gave my family until October to get out.

That's a big conversation all on its own, but as spring and summer approach, I'm trying to think of ways I can sort of take a piece of the farm with me that are a bit more creative, and a bit more ... I don't know. Spirited.

One thing I wanted to do was take some of those tiny glass vials available and fill it with some of the earth from my mom's garden. But I feel like I should do more/something else and I can't figure out what.

Does anyone have some ideas? Something creative that I just can't think of for myself right now?

Yeah, cut off the prick plantation owner's ear and put that in a bottle.

Salt the earth. Make sure no one ever grows crops there again.

I don't really want to hurt the place that I love the most. It's the people who own it I don't like.

I'm looking for a way to sort of take something that will remind me of it, that will last a long time, but I don't know what beyond some dirt in a bottle.

Some of mom's plants will probably end up in my garden, but we don't know yet what will happen (it isn't decided yet where they're going).

Take your camera and take a video tour.  Then take a million pictures and put them on a digital frame.

Taking some of the plants would be the most important thing for me, either through straight transplants or from cuttings.

Maybe take a brick or rock or something else small that is a part of the place as a way to bring the essence of the location along with you as well. At least for me, simple gestures hold more significance and memory than any sort of complex ritual intended to capture everything or outwardly display something.

I second this, take some dirt and have a houseplant with it, something that you really like maybe some kind of tulip or orchid? Dunno what you have growing up there.

As you like rocks and gem polishing, are there any places on the farm that have pretty stones? You could take a few and make some jewelery as mementos, particularity a necklace or bracelet.

And pictures/video tour would also be great to have.

Make an independent 10-15 min documentary of your family and a couple of others that also got screwed out of retirement promises

To shoot it, you'd get tons of sweet video and pics of the land you love, and the interviews would be a memory you'd have for a lifetime.

Then hope it goes viral so the whole world knows these specific property owners are gigantic assholes.

Heh I would do that. I don't know, it's interesting to see how many people in town are already very surprised about what the owners did.

This is what the internet is for.  Then, when more people know about your special place, it will last longer.

Sneak into the owner's house and shit on their dinner table.

On a more positive note, one thing that I sort of miss from when I used to live out in the country is the night sky. Where I live now, there's so much light pollution you can only make out a few stars on a good night. I don't know where your family will end up, but It might be interesting to compare the night sky from the farm to wherever they end up. So maybe take a few pictures of that. Other than that I would sort of echo the others. Make a video with everyone telling their favorite stories, maybe in the place where they occurred if possible. I also know you like to draw, so maybe sketch or paint some of your favorite locations as well.

I second the 'enough dirt for at least a potted plant' and 'photo tour/documentary/viral video' ideas.
