Looks like two different consoles glued together.

And consoles are slowly becoming PCs anyway.  It's got an x86 CPU an runs Windows: the definition of a gaming PC.  As such, I am viewing this as the death of the console and the birth of the High-end HTPC.  And if I were in the market for one for my home theater, the One is a pretty damn attractive HTPC.  But I think we can all agree, it is not a game console.

And Microsoft has been on a trend recently.  A trend of trying to give people what they think is best as opposed to what people want, regardless of whether it is better or not.  Maybe in 3 years people will love what the One is/will become, but right now at this moment people want a box they can put Call of Duty in and play online: a console.

re: wii U,
At least it is still a plain and simple console.  And a fun one at that.

Games require installation and a CD key? Yep, it's basically a PC. At least for most retail games on PC you can transfer your software license without having to repurchase it.

the cluelessness of high level technology (software and hardware) CXOs of today remind me of the cluelessness of high level detroit auto executives of yesteryear.

Exactly what I expected.  I just wish there was a cheaper, non-kinect version.

You know for less than 500 you can build your own HTPC if thats what you are in the market for...

Just to clear things up, Microsoft has confirmed there's no used game fee. It's just that Used games will pretty much be non-existant. Discs are used for installing only, games will NOT be played off them.

To share a game (I think?) you must give it to a friend who has been on your friends list for at least 30 days. And each game can only be given once. Up to 10 family members can play your games for no charge. You can also play on friends xboxs without having to bring the game by signing into xbox live (what if they don't have the game installed? I don't know.), but you can only play for an hour without checking in  ???

It's weird wobbly terms they're throwing out and I'm not sure if they're even looking for gaming audiences.

Do you trust MS to deliver the same degree of customer service that steam does?

If they had just went out and said 'no more disks, games are now $30 - $40 - probably would have been more well received.

Personally I still like to have physical media to a degree, I like to have a bookshelf with a collection on it.

this would have been really good. "by the way games for our system will cost 1/2 to 2/3 of what games for our direct competitor's console will cost and you will never lose the disc"
