The new MGS game has my eye too. It might just be the thing that gets me to buy a PS4. I just hate that most of the next gen consoles aren't backwards compatible. This means I'll probably need to keep my PS3 hooked up too.

They're planning on using Gaikai (think OnLive) to allow a sort of form of backwards compatibility with PS1-3 games. It won't be ready until sometime next year, but the way it sounds is you'll be streaming games from their servers so they don't have to spend the money to include PS3 architecture to let you play them. The tech will also be used for stuff like trying out demos of games or playing a game while it downloads.

How well this'll actually work is yet to be seen, but I dig the idea of purchasing a game online then immediately start playing it via streaming while it downloads to the system in the background.

They probably could. Even if the PS4 is running on a different CPU architecture. Knowing Sony, they'll probably make you repurchase all of your PS3 games on their cloud service they've briefly mentioned if you want BC. Kind of like they did with the later PS3 models and PS1/2 games.

Honestly I don't think PS3/360 -> PS4/XB1 is going to have as much of a graphical jump as previous generations. It will certainly look better, but if your bigger selling point is running things at 60 FPS instead of 30, it doesn't really matter when most home TVs are generally running 30-32 FPS as their refresh rates. It just means a greater level of stability without things like texture popping.

I think the bigger thing is that if you *really* want to play it, you don't have to shell out hundreds of dollars to play it on the new console. That generally has not been a thing in the past and I'm wondering how many other games will get that treatment.

[/quote]Yes. This is why adoption rates for the new consoles will be slow for the first couple years, because the developers will be releasing COD/Madden/Fifa/etc. on the 360 and PS3 still.
