So this discussion of Battletech has convinced me to dig up my old rulebooks, I've got a Level Two book on hand and another around here somewhere but if anyone's interested I've got an idea...

Using a livestreaming program we could play a game, several sides depending on the scenario involved (Merc comps doing jobs, solaris tournaments, house-wars, idk) but the stream host would be something of a "Dungeon Master" who would decide on various events, as well as handle "rolls" (Using Random.org?)

as far as maps go, it might be amusing to use locations in google earth for the "map" and then minature rules, or just make maps before hand and distribute them before/during each game.

Thoughts? I've got a couple rule books, one Level two, and another that I can't find at the moment but could probably find with a bit of searching.

If you are making a map, I either reccomend a play mat or heroscape hexes.  My dad used the latter for a while before using them to construct his own 3D models out of foam.  I would personally like to roll the dice myself in regards to my mechs.

I have no world-building materials, nor a decent web cam, or a decent collection of miniatures XD I was thinking more along the lines of handing out JPGs of pre-made maps. As for the dice rolls, the 'host' rolling was something to the effect of an attempt to keep the "He's lying about his roll" to a minimum.

Eh.  Thats why I prefer face to face over the interwebs.  Too many trust issues spring up.

You want everyone to trust you on  your rolls, use IRC, #brbuninstalling on GameSurge, Or start a new channel. The ChanServ has a !d option, which is a diceroll

It supports a pretty large value.

!d 1d6 rolls one d6

!d 2d20 rolls 2 d20's

You need modifier?

!d 1d20+4 - Thanks to my modifier I got a crit!

You all can be there, and there are witnesses. Oh and it actually accepts ANY value for the D part (except extremely giant numbers, but most dicerolls aren't that high, you're not going to !d 999999d9999999+999999999 ... usually)

I've been trying to get people to agree to do a D&D campaign this way for quite some time. Have had... limited success with interest. So many people want to run something else, I think it'd be best to do something more people are familiar with.

Haven't you guys ever wondered where /me came from  in chat systems? It was in IRC, /me was suppose to emulate you (your character) doing an action.
/ me FlyingMongoose]attacks orc with sword. -> * FlyingMongoose attacks orc with sword. (had to put space because it actually has a synonymous function in SMF)
!d 1d20 -> 16 -> HIT!
!d 1d20+4 -> 10+4 -> 14 -> CRITICAL!
!d 3d6 -> whatever total damage (I don't remember dice roll orders honestly for D&D but you get the picture).

Also, I would not be comfortable as a DM honestly. I've never completed a campaign, and I have only ever played like twice (very few people around me are interested in Pen & Paper gaming). And while people tell me I'm a good story teller, I unfortunately, when writing, often time sit there for hours before I even start.

Did not know that XD Regardless, haven't really selected a DM yet, still in the planning phase for this whole thing, but it could be interesting if this becomes a weekly event.

Even cooler, almost all IRC clients (mIRC for Windows, LimeChat for Mac, and XChat for Linux, for the simplest ones are what I recommend, Ainmosni don't hate me) have a logging system. This being the case, whoever the DM is can have it turned on whenever the game goes, so we can post all the events of the game as it goes on week to week.
