Good compilation of info in this GAF thread, constantly being updated too http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=869807

TL;DR the Dota 2 SDK that just got released has a bunch of Source 2 stuff in it and they also completely overhauled Hammer and has an alpha 64 bit client for Dota 2 that runs in Source 2

Nope: MOBA Tool Concentration confirmed.

Valve is adding to the genre that is ruining gaming.

[/quote]It's not Valve's fault that everyone is starting to pursue the MOBA craze. It's like how it's not Blizzard's fault everyone tried to cash in on WoW and failed. Companies will crash and burn in the MOBA craze just like they did for the MMO craze. Everyone hopping on it is also hopping on it way too late compared to something like WoW considering the genre has existed for 11 years. The two winners of the craze are already decided and these people aren't going to steal anyone away from Dota or League. The only market where someone will be able to cash in on the craze is on console. The PC market already has its allegiances decided. If you hate the genre, just ignore anything about it. It's not that fucking hard.

If you also say it's MOBA tool concentration, you've never paid attention to anything about the Source 2 rumblings over the past few years. There's direct references to Source 2 in Source Filmmaker. We already saw an updated version of the L4D2 map "Plantation" in Source 2 with new lighting and shadows, in addition to improved foliage and textures. The co-creator of Counterstrike said L4D3 is in development.

There's also the fact they completely overhauled the Hammer editor. They wouldn't do that for just one game. They're clearly gearing up for a launch of Source 2, probably announced alongside Left 4 Dead 3. This also confirms Source 2 is backwards compatible as the Dota 2 client that you can run in Source 2 has all of the Source 1 assets loaded into it. So L4D3 will likely have all of the maps from L4D1 and 2 playable in it as well.

I wonder if it will be possible at some point to create an engine that is easy to update in a way that is backwards compatible.  What I mean is say you release an amazing game knowing that it will be outdated in 5 years.  So you use this engine that can constantly be incrementally improved.  While the engine is being incrementally improved the improvements can be applied to the original game easily.  So then you have an engine that is future proof.

I would love it if someone could come up with this because there are games like Half Life that I would continue to play if it wasn't so dated.

Surf.  Pick up black Mesa source.  And the limitations are pretty much in a few places.  One: modeling and texturing. Any major change to those requires recreation of assets. The same can be said for sound.  Two : hardware but we have started to reach a near stagnant hardware stage ultimately with few major advances in the tech but just cramming more into  smaller parts.

Ultimately the ideal one is not future proof but hardware ignorant.  Basically allowing it to run on almost any platform despite the hardware.  But this also reaches back to assets.  If you only have super high definition textures and super high resolution models a phone usually won't run it as well as PC does unless the engine can handle scaling like that. Is there an engine like that for the current generation? Yes UE4
