Prompted by the IRC discussion, who knows of any games (FPS or Otherwise) that we could engage most of the community in?

Things to Look for:
* Supports 24 - 32 people or more
* F2P (Or at least easy on the wallet)
* Our own server (preferred)
* Established or Growing Playerbase
* Easy to drop in/out of
* Alltalk for in game comms
* Low to mid-range system requirements

I had previously hoped this would have been what PS2 could have turned into had it not been massively fucked up on SOE's part. I'd still like to try to run some regular Saturday ops with as many people as possible (at least its free) where we just get drunk and go around wrecking shit.

But what suggestions do other people have on this? Or thoughts?

Just scrolling through my Steam library I've got a few possibilities

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare- Class based Medieval battle game. Game modes include Seige, Slay the King, Control Points, and both flavors of deathmatch. 24.99 regularly

HAWKEN- free to play mech battle game. use in game currency or real money to unlock more mechs/weapons has your standard assortment of gamemodes

Red Orchestra- Another World War 2 game. Soviets and Nazis go head to head in a variety of shitty Russian villages and also Stalingrad. 19.99, but most of BRBU probably has it after it was free for a week.

Counter Point:

Star Wars Galaxies:

Pros:
Old school goodness
FTP (Legally providing if you have a set of disks (can be bought on amazon for cheep) or I don't mind giving out my copy if no one cares)
VERY Social
Persistant
Lot's of different ways to play (good for all gamer types)
Lot's of sandbox ways to use your imagination
PVP and PVE (though endgame is quite PVP oriented)

Cons:
It's a Emu run project
Not 100% complete yet (though very playable and heavy server up time)
Can be boring without comunity.

Counter point: Fuck MMOs

I know it's popular to hate on Call of Duty, but is Codaw an option?  I think it does dedicated servers.
Battlefield 4 would also be alright if we give up on all talk and just post mumble info.

If its F2P....eh Id say it doesn't matter, the only thing Id say with something like STO is - how far is a newbie behind the curve and how hard is it to catch up

Also team size might be an issue with COD

If we're throwing MMO's into the mix, I'm actually going to put ArcheAge out there; it's free to play off the bat, you can get supporter for in-game-gold (buying Apex), you also have the option to pay. Plus it has both PVE and PVP (but all on one server), and boats! (You can be a pirate! seriously!) I'm on server Enla in the eastern region as my main and the curve isn't too terrible, plus for higher levels to go back to lower levels is a little useful (hidden quests from killing lots of specific types).

If we're sticking to FPS:
Unreal Tournament 4

Unreal Tournament 4 as outlined by epic:
It will be free, completely, no matter what, no micropayments, you're getting the whole game for nothing.
It is using (and accepting) user created maps and assets but also being approved by and developed by epic (to Unreal Engine Subscribers you can get the source, which I do have)

It is currently pre-alpha, but you can get a server going, and get the client. It doesn't look pretty but I'm sure it will grow and most of us are adult enough to understand "pre-alpha but playable" does NOT mean "it's a bad game" it's just an unfinished game.

To get UT4 you gotta download the Epic Launcher from here: https://forums.unrealtournament.com/show...able-Build (must be registered). If it asks you to subscribe, don't, once you have the launcher Unreal Tournament will show up on the left panel to be downloaded. It is currently small, but the Epic Launcher will keep it patched when there's a new build.

Also: It's kind of similar to gameplay we're all familiar with

Lastly: I do still have access to the Unreal Engine and am working to get a login-less version of the Unreal Editor compiled so you guys can fiddle with it.

And as my last game option for very long time from now: Star Citizen Persistent Universe when it's released because there's so much awesome in that...

Couple hours a day and you'll be at max level inside of a month.

UT4 stress test on a server sounds very tempting....

I really think more of you guys should check out Guns of Icarus Online. The way the gameplay is setup, it really encourages teamwork like I've never seen before in another game. There's nothing quite like everybody on your crew performing like a well oiled machine and the intense battles that can occur when it happens. The downside is that it's $15 and there are premium costume items for sale as well, but all the ships, classes, components, and tools are unlocked through gameplay. There also isn't any support for dedicated servers, so it's more akin to console-style matchmaking where you form a party of players and jump from match (or series of matches) to match or setup your own.  There is support for tournament play as well.

I also second the Chivalry idea as well.

I don't like the idea of an MMO though, even a F2P one. There's just too much of a time investment required for everyone to be on an equal level and be able to do shit together. This is coming from a FFXIV fan, where things are setup a little better for cross-level gameplay, and I still think it's a bad idea.

Normally I'd agree but you can get to max level so fast it really doesn't matter. Its literally a couple weeks of playing tops.

Obviously you're not playing the right games, because if you can't get from 0 to max within minutes of playing it's just not worth playing!

Even so, caff has said a trial of UT4 will be run on sunday, show up bitches!

This also applies to SWG as there actually are no levels. You can skill out your character in about a week if you play 1-2 hours a day. It's more of a sandbox style game.

Obviously you missed my post. You should be able to go from 0 to max by doing absolutely nothing and it should take minutes at most.

UT4 was stupid easy to set up, we'll see if we can get something going this Sunday, it felt a lot like you were playing UT99 on mid-low settings, but still fun.
