Just as the topic says. As much as I love MWO, not everyone seems to anymore. I'd like to find a new game we can all coalesce around. Part of the issue seems to be that so many releases either are COD/BF nonsense or don't lend themselves well to large group play. I'm open to ideas here.  Preferably, suggestions should have the following:

- One time cost, inexpensive maintenance costs, or free and still legit.
- Good for group play.
- Not absolute murder on newbies (PS2 and MWO, I'm looking at you... ;P ).
- Generally a fun, social time.
- Trollable (because who doesn't enjoy blowing gens).

I'll work on coming up with some suggestions. Other than get back to MWO, you nerds.

<@Negate> there is a simple pattern
<+Karrde> I changed my mind.  Gonna cosplay as a gay demon from hell and get negate raped instead XD
<+Caffeine`work> Karrde: Gay demon? Why would you need to cosplay just go as yourself
<+FlyingMongoose> Caffeine`work: Karrde would actually have to tone it down some.

What about some of the stuff we used to do, like mod nights or multiplayer crap? We've already seen a small resurgence of The Ship.

I know Mongoose tried to get those going again, but the issue was not many people were available for them in-addition to not having the games. Obviously money is a big factor here. But Half-Life 2 mods are a dime-a-dozen! Beyond that there are free weekends that happen frequently now and we could hop on those.

I still think unreal 4 is best bet as it is free. But it is still (as with all unreal games) difficulty curved.

We could play ARK on an official server.

Rainbow Six Siege closed beta is around corner but that's smaller.

The Division is also coming soon.

I personally lose interest on everything blizzard makes really fast so personally that's out for me.

If we go MMO I've been playing ESO and Trove lately.

Lastly GTA V (Online) just got open world events update which is nifty.

I say it's gotta be private server based and community-centric. F2P almost always has a nasty grind to it that always leaves new players in the dust.

And that's part of why Mechwarrior wasn't it...god the grind :/

I still enjoy it, but not more than like once a week and playing completely casually.

UT4 basically is the only one that fits the appropriate criteria then.

F2P and Free, no pay to win. Can run private server or or server hub (let's you spin up any match type instantly and does some simple match making).

There are other arena shooters too, though they don't get updated enough.

I'll sift through my existing steam library and through the store and even early access to see what I can find.

I still feel Insurgency is still a very strong game too.

Mentioning ARK again we can have an us run public server (this would make me more willing to restart a character for it). Our private again but while others did help keep server up for a couple of months I can't afford to be the only payee when no one can contribute at the moment.

Oh and Block n Load but this is match spin up only and only up to 10 people per match.

Dirty Bomb is fun but matchmaking only and while not developed by a company known to push pay 2 win the publisher is.

Fractured space is also matchmaking only and while it supports party instances again spin up only. Imagine a more active space combat system like EVE'S but more but an MP game with a capture the point mode

And I'm pretty sure we've all agreed that the new star wars battlefront is out add it is basically battlefield with a star wars skin.

Then there is CS:GO which seems to be picking up popularity again.

I've only checked MLG here is current PC list
http://gamebattles.majorleaguegaming.com/pc

Also CS:GO or MOBA games seem to be the only ones you can "go anywhere" with right now for competitive pc gaming. If that's your jam.

Also MOBA games are not fun to me (and also don't usually spurt enough players anyway)

I also (now that it's been fixed and patched so much) enjoy BF4 and Hardline just no one to play with plus origin exclusive.

We could always go back and play good old games that the community hasn't had a chance to get tired of. For example, I had a ton of fun with FEAR multiplayer and Wolfenstein Enemy Territory in previous years, and both are free. I expect the latter still has a decent multiplayer community.

I'm up for trying most anything! What if we set up a server for 2 weeks at a time and test games on it? Should be fun.

If I set UT4 up again should it be a hub or a single server with 1 game type? Hub allows players to pick and basically is a spin up system but can be privately hosted

What's the downside to going with hub?

Anyone can spin up an instance at any time and it can have an impact on server performance as the same machine would be running multiple servers, however people usually only join servers that already have people in them so it shouldn't spin up to often.

I have to start pointing something out, having done the server admin stuff over the years this is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT.

If you want to run a game with privately hosted servers, if you want population you have to (have to, it is REQUIRED) be willing to sit in an empty server by yourself or with only 1 other person for hours and hours and hours, as the ONLY thing that breeds population anymore is existing population.

With the number of games available and other existing servers out there that may have population already in them, the only way you'll get your large group going is by already having a decent sized group, or just sitting, and waiting, and idling, and periodically moving your mouse so you don't get kicked. This is no longer a suggestion, this is a REQUIREMENT of this type of game (and this is why matchmaking is taking over, as it guarantees players).

That's right, the #1 and only rule of a privately run (not necessarily password protected) server, if you want it to succeed is to not play the game but sit in the server while empty. Seriously, you can not populate the server unless you already have population (and no, bots don't work). But with hub you'd basically already have your group and spin up your instance when you need it for whatever game mode.

Maybe doing something a bit more old school? I suggest SW: Battlefront 2. Kinda checks most the boxes and you can run it on a potato. I've personally never played it but I have it in my steam library from a big pack I bought one time.

*cough*gunsoficarusonline*cough*

Seriously, guys. If I can get a group of us to play together one night I think we'd really enjoy it and I've got two keys I can give out. I know some of you have it already too. I'm free most of this week so it would be a perfect time to pick a night to play.

It's also currently on sale in the Humble Store for $1.49!

GOI online looks fun. I'll take another gander at UT4.

I'm not interested in GOI, plus there's the fact that I have too many bills and buying another game (even at $10) is out of the question right now.
