That should be it.  No more than 4!  Just in case it didn't set the max players right.

I set it up as private on purpose so you will have to manual connect!!!

Actually I managed to set it up by myself (with the help of the steam forums) but I needed help setting a static IP and SSH.  Also I had put in my external IP where I should have put in my internal  :-\

So far I've gotten 3 in and it seems to be working ok.  Let me know if there are any problems and if there are reasonable ways of getting better performance I will do them.

Good news and bad news.  Good news is that my desktop is perfectly capable of running a L4D server.  Bad news is I have bandwidth issues because I'm currently running it wireless.  I wanted to keep that a secret and test it to see if it was ok first but its not.  Thats cool its just a bit of hassle on my part.  I had to switch cable modems because the one I had was failing and I could use the one for my phone because I switched to cable phone.  I just have to visit cox and get a replacement (which they owe me anyways as that is part of what I'm paying for), and then move my wireless router back upstairs and plug my desktop back in to a wired connection.

Not a major issue just a bit annoying.  For now 2 people can play fine, 3 is a bit shaky and 4 will probably be shit but when I move everything we should have a fully operational 4 mans server, maybe 8.

Yeah. Not a bad sever, but once four people get going, it tends to wet itself and die.

Yea but at least now I know its completely because its on wireless, my CPU was only going to like 20% and my memory was fine as well.

No, you don't know it's completely because of your wireless, your CPU and memory usage aren't a bandwidth monitor.  However I already know it'll run like shit for me, you being in the other corner of the country and all ;P.

I read through the steam forums on L4D and the consensus was it doesnt use as much bandwidth as TF2 but uses as much horsepower as a 24 man server.  So if my PC can run it performance wise I'm hoping that the wired thing will iron out the rest.  Otherwise I will have wasted a couple afternoons.

I wish they would fix TF2 for mulitcore use..it's pretty bad that I get an awesome framerate no matter what in L4D, but I get terrible rates in TF2. My connection is usually a lot more stable in L4D as well..but that's pretty much expected.

cant you move the box over to a router with an open port before doing all that work ?

....maybe see right now the router/cable modem is in our coat closet next to our front door.  The computer is directly above it.  I have a townhouse so its like 2 shoeboxes stacked on top of each other.  Although I could try and just run a wire up......hmmmm this idea intrigues me.  Then I can get the best of both worlds and I won't have to move/redo anything.

Hopefully I can find a place where they are already running wires up there and just piggy back on that.

Yea I know but like I said I wanted to test things before I went through the trouble and I didn't want you insulting me about the wireless until I had finished testing it (cuz then people would probably shun the server).  But yea I think I'm going to just try to run a cat 5 from upstairs to down because I get better coverage with my wireless downstairs since all my consoles and my laptop are used downstairs.

I just checked, almost all wiring leads to the closet so yea good news!  I just need to figure out which jack upstairs would be best to go through....I have a good idea of which one is basically directly above.  Now if I remember correctly you use a guide wire to go down and then pull the cable back up.  I think I can grab one of those special guide wire thingees at lowes pretty cheap.

If anyone knows anything tips are appreciated, I haven't done amateur wiring since my last apartment that I did a lot of creative things to (drywall putty FTW).
