Just curious, I should be able to tie it to the steam group so that when the party leader is searching for a server the party will go to it first, but people would be able to join mid game (randoms that is)

I was all hot for L4D a while ago, but kinda burned through it. Since they make it such a pain to play on servers you like, it kinda seems pointless to shell out dough for a L4D server to advertise the community. I wish it were otherwise.

I think Caff's point is not really advertisement, but just putting people in the servers when we play games so that when people ragequit midway we have some bodies to fill it up with. Good being what I just said, bad being server might be taken when we try and play a game.

Advertising on L4D is like advertising on the outside of a bus. The only people who are even going to see it are too busy to care.

Well no one uses the private server at this time Sad

This is mainly due to Valve's lunkheadedness more than anything, but continuing to pay for a private server that no one uses I might as well flush money down the toilet. Its not a good use of everyone that donated money. If its set to public we can do normal lobbies and have people possibly join mid round. The biggest complaint I have about private servers is that there is no lobby to go back to, so even if people want to continue playing, it all gets broken up Sad

I would like more people to vote on this though, if you play L4D at all you should probably vote.

There's my vote. Even when I played L4D every night, the server mechanic was so crappy I just wound up playing on the first acceptable random server.

I believe they have patched it somewhat when it comes to looking for a server and the order goes something like this

1) Steam Group Associated (Lobby Leader)
2) Best Ping (Local of leader)
3) Best Ping (region)
4) Best ping (global)

Here's the quick and dirty:

Benefits
-Easier to join our server (no password)
-Easier to find our server (shows up in steam group)
-Steamgroup exclusive means we get first crack at our server when empty
-Pubs can join when not empty to fill it up

Detractors
-A bit of extra money
-May have to kick some pubs every once in a while
-Pubs have a habit of bitching about everything
-They can be griefers
-I hate 90% of pubs
-At least they can only join when we've already started a game with less than 4 people

I voted to make the server public, I also would donate. There isn't much of an argument against opening the server up to pubs apart from a full server when everyone wants to play.

But, considering the number of servers available for random matches ours being full all the time is unlikely. This is also something easy enough to solve by having an admin "boot all" script.

Just because the server is public doesn't warrant making it any less exclusive.

Boot all script would certainly discourage people from favoriting the server though. :-\

The exclusivity vibe in a lot of recent threads would suggest people don't care. I'm not gonna argue that point here as the irony of the anti-pub crowd has been pointed out numerous times but setting the server to public will mean that pubs will be playing on it. If they're going to get kicked every time an existing community member wants to play, it becomes an exercise in futility.

Also, it seems to be a fairly common occurrence to get kicked (with accompanying temp ban) upon joining a server if a few people are on and just want to play with each other. While this is a bit of a dick move, it is kinda understandable and I would say it's just something to grin and bear. If the perpetrators are allowed to continue playing, there's always a chance they'll enjoy the server and maybe look to joining the group/forums/etc. Not sure how that will sit with some members though.

I believe L4D and TF2 present very different gaming environments, I would think that in L4D if you have a few pubbies playing with you, it will come down to their individual conduct. I am not going to give out admin to more than a tiny handful of people and there will be no reserve or booting plugin, in fact, I can't put something up like TF2 since the maximum size of a server I can set up is 8, I can't make a hidden "9th" connection slot.

In my view at least, it would come down to this, if a pub is being a team player, they would not be vote kicked, but if you have a friend who wants to play and you have someone in game who is either downright terrible and not a team player, you'd probably boot them.

Also since is probably going to come up at some point, if you get vote kicked from a server it places a temp ban of I believe 30 min on you, don't come asking me to undo that ban, since its going to go away by the time I'd get to it anyway.

I wonder if the message informing the player they were kicked can be changed to include that bit. That'd be handy to know as I'm sure it'd freak out some people. Smile

If it becomes hard to get into our own server all we have to do is set it to steamgroup exclusive.  This means that only people in our steamgroup can start playing on it, then if there are some slots left they go to any pubs that want it.  When the game is over everyone gets booted anyways so it can't stay full without BRBUers.
